I machined up a couple 22 Nosler barrels today, one with a 1:8 twist 18" ultra-light profile and the other 26" 1:12 twist bull barrel.

The 26" barrel started off at 27", so I popped off a couple of 40 grainers before finishing it out at 26".

At 27", the 40gr Nosler Ballistic Tip bullet averaged 3985fps with one round hitting 4102fps.
After cutting it down to 26", it averaged 4065fps with the same load.
Factory 55's went 3630fps, factory 77's went 3050fps, and the 75gr A-max went 3060fps.

Moving to the 18" barrel, the 40 grainers went 3710fps, factory 55's went 3348fps, factory 77's went 2880fps, and the 75gr A-Max went 2901fps.

The 18" barrel has a rifle length gas system and the 26" barrel uses a rifle plus two gas tube.

Tony

P.S. Yes, I know the big bullets aren't stable in the 1:12 twist barrel.

This post reminds me of Tom Cruise in Top Gun.

"I feel the need, the need for speed!".

I wondered if that's why you needed some +2 tubes.

Cool

Any data on ES and SDs?

I was just reading about this cartridge last week. They advertise a 300fps improvement over .223. I asked myself why would you upgrade your AR to it. Seems too niche for not that much of a gain.

But wow! That's some impressive speed.

that is pretty impressive. a 75 amax at 3k+ would make for a fun long range trainer. hmmm

Keep in mind, that was with a 26" barrel which is pretty damn long and unwieldy on an AR-15.  However, for shooting prairie dogs from a portable bench set up next to your truck, it's no big deal.

Here's a pic of a 16" M4 style rifle above a 25" rifle.  The 26" 22 Nosler barrel is under that.

@ those speeds, the heavies might be spinning fast enough, no?

Not even close. They need to be doing about 7000 fps out of 12" twist to even be marginally stable.

A 9" twist might work but even are those are usually marginal.

Good to know. So... when are you going to do a 6mm or 25 cal wildcat based off the Nosler Tony?
Link Posted: 2/28/2017 12:30:58 AM EDT
[#10]
A 22 cal ar15 wildcat I have been playing with reports 3900fps 55gn and 3550fps 70gn out of a 22" 1 in 10.  I have a 20" 1 in 12 that shoot 40 and 50gns great.  I shot my chrony so no data yet.  I was definitely not pushing it.  Oh the 40 gn are running 4360+.

I was drawn to this as it produced 22-250 speeds and more out of the Ar15 platform.  DO not want to go to an ar10 or custom.  Reaching out will be really fun.

The 22 Nosler came out just after I invested in mine.  May have gone with the Nosler if it had come out a little earlier.

Also interested in this,  hopefully 6mm speed is high out of a 20 or 22 inch barrel.

Probably higher with a 6mm and 55s than a .22 and 55s.

You're probably right.....I've got a 6mmHagar and some 55 grain bullets, but I've never tried them.

Awe... one of Bruce's. I wish that case was more optimized for heavier bullets. Cool round though.

So, let's say you cooked up a 1:7 twist 22 Nosler with a 24" barrel?

Legit 1000yd rifle with 75-77 HPBTs?  75 AMAX?

If you use a PRI, ASC or HK mag for a 2.3 COAL and a 77tmk I guarantee it will get there. The 77tmk is still super sonic at 1k out of my 20" 223

Black Hole Weaponry has been doing a 22/6.8 SPC wildcat for awhile. It gets dang near 22-250 speeds.

22 Nosler is esencially a 6.8 spc case with a 22 bullet. They rebated the rim so your 5.56 bolt will work.

Kinda hope they come out with a 6.8 Nosler next.

I want to see someone load up some M855A1, or a very light varmint load, and test it against armor and the squirrels I see around base. I'd pay for it!

I'm glad to see new, intresting rounds are still being made.

Nice velocities. I really want to try one of these necked up to 6mm with the 95gr SMK bullets in a micro bolt action like the howa or CZ 527.

Needs more 40 or 50 grain Blitzkings.  I love the BTs and VMaxs, but nothing launches a prairie dog like a Blitzking.

Are you going to make more AR barrels in that twist?
