So i have been reading posts for at least a year now and finally have a question that I need some help with. I am building an 6.8 SPC AR on a PSA lower and can't seem to find many complete uppers; 16" midlength or carbine, (not looking for anything special but want a nice one) to pick from.
It is a short list but help me pick the best of these or feel free to give me another suggestion if you like...Just to help set the bar I'm leaning towards the Stag 5H at $549 w/ bolt and CH and 1 mag as the best deal. Bushmaster Stag 5H Bison Armory (these seem to be a little on the highside) and J&T Thanks for your input. |
Don't forget about ARperformance. Between them and Bison you can't go wrong.
PSA also sometimes has 6.8 uppers but I'm not sure of their stock right now. |
Thanks for the heads up on 6.8 forum will check it out and might repost....is the extra
$$ worth the price on Ar performance/bison over stag? Thanks |

i have a stag 5h, when i first got it it had a mismarked barrel 1/10 twist it was really a 1/11 i returned it to stag and the sent me a new one. the result was a upper that is very accurate and light. i owned both a bison 18 spr upper and sold it just because the stag was more useful for hunting. i have harvested more game with my stag 6.8 upper then with any other firearm i own it is just that good. dont get me wrong the bison was good but for the money i am very happy with the stag.

I've got one of the ARP barrels that's spiral fluted. That thing is a tack driver and since you can't get them anymore, it's worth it's weight in gold to me.
glad to hear you had some good luck with Stag as I am more comfortable with there price range...I'm waiting to hear back from PSA as they might have some new 6.8's in inventory sometime soon.
i found my stag on the ee for 425 with two mags and 4 boxes of ammo what a deal!
Not to thread jack but are you 6.8 owners using your rifles for hunting? If so, what kind of range are you shooting at? I am trying to decide between getting a complete .308 rifle or a 6.8 upper for an extra lower I have and I am just as interested in the feedback from this thread for myself. How is the Bushy 6.8?
i took a hog at about 150 yards, but most shots were taken at 100 or less. that said i sighted my rifle to 200 yards. i would not hesitate to shoot that far.
What about a rock river or CMMG uper? Anybody have any luck with there 6.8's?
Sorry for the minor hijack, is there any manufacturer NOT using the 6.8SPC II chamber?

Their products are backed up by excellent customer service at AR Performance. Very happy with my 6.8 barrel/bolt I bought from them.
best bang for the buck is gonna be the psa
if you spend a little more, go with arp if you want piston, go with lwrc |
all 4 of my ARPs shoot .5 moa.
my longest shot was 442 yards at a turkey on the trot and I missed his neck but broke his leg, then when going to get it I killed a charging boar at 160 yards |

Not to thread jack but are you 6.8 owners using your rifles for hunting? Do a search on this site and www.68forums.com and you'll find a great many people hunt with 6.8. The furthest shot I know of was almost 400y (360-380) on an Elk. It was posted here and at 68Forums. What are you looking to hunt? |

Good ol' South Geordia deer and wild hogs. You'll find the 6.8 to be an excellent cartridge then. |

What about a rock river or CMMG uper? Anybody have any luck with there 6.8's? I have a complete RRA upper. Shoots real good or at least for my bad eye sight. Half inch groups at 100 yards. I sighted it in for 200 yards and have taken 2 does at 220 to 230 yards with it using Barnes 90 grain ttx bullets this year over middle of the load of xterminator powder. I still need to dial in my load for this barrel because I think it can shoot tighter, atleast it shoots clover leaf patterns with remington shells. Upper cost me 350 bucks at the fun show because I know the booth operator and I won the flip of the coin other wise it was 400 bucks. |

ARP, Bison, Noveskie, Spikes Tactical....a couple others I cant think of...go to 68forums.com....you can find out builders info, load info with different barrel lengths and everything inbetween for the 68.
I have a Bison 18" upper, 1/11 twist, 4 groove rifling, mid length gas system rig and my reloads (SSA Brass, Wolf SRM primers, 29.0gr R10x and 110gr Sierra Pro Hunters hit around 2700 fps and one holem out at 100 yards if I do my part. That load is good out to about 310 yards and is very effective on pigs, deer, coyotes, and probly even rabbits and squirrels as well....lol...I priced up an 18" mid length gas system for my buddy on the Bison website and it was around $650 bucks......not too bad IMO....it was fairly plain jane as well tho. I went stupid on my upper and it cost me $1200 for the upper alone......all depends on what you're wanting to spend. |

Anywho... I went with ARP 16" Scout barrel/bolt combo.. I'll slap her together in when I get back from my deployment. I plan on using it on whitetails out to 300 meters. |

I smoked a charging squirrel at 160 inches. Total adrenaline rush.

I mounted a Stag 7H upper to my RRA LAR15 NM lower and have been more than pleased with its performance. They fit like a glove and the overall quality of my Stag upper is excellent. The barrel is 20.77" with a 1 in 11" twist. I use my 6.8 SPCII for hunting, or at the range only. I'm thinking of putting another together for my wife and it will use a Stag 7H upper as well. Good luck and enjoy.

So for hunting and range use do guys think a muzzle break/comp would be helpful vs the standard flash hider?
Thanks |

I've got a true Frankenstein gun.

So for hunting and range use do guys think a muzzle break/comp would be helpful vs the standard flash hider? Thanks No brake or comps helps accuracy, the bullet is long gone before the gases behind it can do anything. Brakes with big side ports reduce recoil but also create a lot of blast and noise to the shooter. Comps or brakes with top ports can reduce muzzle climb for a faster follow up shot if needed and some brakes can allow the shooter to see the impact. Brakes and comps are mostly for 3 gun and tactical shooters so they can get back on target sooner or perform double and triple taps without waiting for the muzzle to come back down. Poorly designed brakes or comps with a large internal chamber can hurt accuracy if turbulant gases are allowed to pass around the sides of the bullet before the bullet exits the brake. edit sp |

ARP, Bison, Rainier. Those would be my choices in order. I'm running a ARP now and will be startng on 6.8 #2 using one of his bbls soon....
first thing you need to do is decide on whether or not you want a piston or di and then go from there
At this point I have no interest in piston and want to keep it simple and go DI
then you want to get either the psa or the arp for your upper.
The psa has gotten great reviews, uses fn barrels, and has been getting really great reviews on 68forums.com and the price point is $400. If you want something more expensive with a some more bells and whistles, go with ARPerformance. |
Can you send me a link of PSAs 6.8...I don't see it on there site...the only one I see is a Stag.
Thanks |

I use a 12.5" SBR to hunt GA whitetail and whatever is walking around at that given moment. I busted a buck in November with an 85 grain TSX and was extremely happy with the results. I hunt small food plots and planted pines, so my shots are <200 yards. If I were sighted in for further, I wouldn't hesitate out to 300. No options on the land I hunt to shoot further. |

the 6.8 is the number 2 caliber out of the ar platform and it's all from hunters
