I've got two rifle length gas 18" barreled rifles. Unless I was building a dedicated bump gun I would stick with rifle gas.

I have two 18" guns one is a Saber Defence 18" mid gas, the other is a Bushmaster 20" govt profile cut to 18". Both have comps and carbine stocks. The Rifle gas seems to shoot softer.
fwiw
edit to add: both guns will shoot anything from wolf to m193 with no malfunctions.
