Simple poll for showing use of rifles, rifles only

completely anonymous

Recreation - "for fun", mostly because shooting rifles is fun

Sport Hunting - To include subsistence hunting (mostly because there's only six available poll options)

Varmint Hunting - Prairie dogs, coyote, and pigs primarily; i.e. predator or pest control work

Competition - Regardless of discipline, F-Class, Service Rifle, High Power, local weekend competitions, etc

Work (Civil) - Domestic non-military, primarily domestic law enforcement, to include practice and training

Work (Other) - Non-domestic, military, contract work, to include practice and training

I'm just trying to determine the audience for relevant content
I'm not doing anything with the information presented here, it's just for forum visibility

If there's enough participation, I'll probably make a few more polls to parse out each individual category, or create new categories as they present themselves

Would've voted for two but only could vote for one so I voted Varmint.  Recreational would be my secondary choice but I use my rifles primarily to clear stray animals of all likes off the premises........My go to HD firearm would be my G19

While I enjoy just going out shooting I concentrate on the basics mostly. Along with reloading, shot and move, weapon transition, malfunction clearing, target/threat transition.  There are many fun drills you can do that not only making you more effective with your weapon but also change up the boring "stand there and shoot at a paper taget" type shooting. I used my guns for defence, hunting and recreation.

I poke holes in paper and ring some steel.

I shoot for fun and to be able to defend my family and home sufficiently.

Defense of self, family, and community. The latter entails quite a bit of small-unit training, live-fire drills, and force-on-force.

Yes, I'll go shoot some steel and junk to blow of steam occasionally, but serious defensive work is by far the priority. I wish I could say that neither myself nor anyone I know had had cause to use it, but that's not the case. Our numbers of DGUs, both with and without shots fired (shots fired only at animals, thankfully) jumped from 1 or 2 to a combined 6 or 7 within the past week. Everything kind of went to hell in short order, and one situation is still ongoing.

Varmint hunting, paper punching, HD/Things Are Bad scenario

I shoot as much as I can.

I hunt, shoot competitions, & punch paper all really as an excuse to be outdoors with firearms.

but with the size of my collection it is a chore just to keep everything oiled & zeroed.

This.

I'll try hunting if I am fortunate enough to get an invite from somebody with property.

Plinking and Hunting.

I voted recreation because the number of rounds fired for recreation vs. either type of hunting is probably in the 100's : 1 now that I got my first AR15 this month. I do pig and deer hunting currently, but not much pig hunting until I get my LR308 pig gun up and running.

Where is the Internet commando choice... "I buy and brag about my fan boy flavor of the week, and flaunt my sub MOA groups with M855 "armor piercing" ammo (despite the gun never leaving the underside of my bed in parent's' basement), then sell my "outdated" guns/parts wherever I need cash to replentish my stash of Monsters and pay online gambling/porn accounts?"

I am a history and geography nerd so I buy cold war era rifles and shoot them a bunch. Favorites are the Fal, galil, ak74, m4, etc.

AR's / SCAR = defense and recreation.

Grendel / Bolt Guns = competition and recreation.

Pistols = self defense.

I started punching paper but have transitioned to competition. Everything AR is getting tailored to the disciplines I shoot. Hunting is a distant second.

I'll probably let this drift to archive once the poll is past 300 or so, but we have a lot more on this site than just 200 members
after that I'll start another poll to subtend the "recreation use" category

My range doesn't allow steel, but I do perforate a lot of paper.  In addition to the Wyndham Bushmaster, I use a Springfield M1A, a couple of Enfields and a variety of Mosin-Nagants, including an M39.  I like to be sufficiently proficient with a variety of rifles to react defensively no matter what gun comes quickly to hand in an emergency.

I reload, too.  Does that count as "recreation?"

Voted competition because that's what my focus is on. I'm constantly tinkering. It's shot weekly at a minimum.

Work rifle has been the same for years. Carried a lot, shot once or twice a year.

This poll unrealistically pigeon-holes us to a single use.

I hunt.  I target shoot.  I do precision long range shooting.  I shoot benchrest style for small groups. I reload and develop custom ammo for varying uses.  I use the rifle(s) for home defense.  I shoot varmints.  I shoot steel.  I shoot moving targets.  I train.  Sometimes I just do recreational plinking.  I don't use my AR for work.

I cannot meaningfully separate these things.  Picking out one because I might be using one a bit more than another at a particular snapshot of time is likely to be seasonal or skewed because I am doing something short term with one rifle at the moment.  This would produce a false sense of use.

Yeah, all those activities you mentioned could be considered recreational as an aggregate.  Even though the underlying reason we have guns is for defense of person and property.

I mostly just shoot targets for fun and self defense practice. Most my firearms are modern military type for defensive use. I enjoy competition shooting as well, but sometimes it gets too much like a game and less like a serious way to practice self defense. I go hunting every once in a while, but it's harder living in the city compared to country living.

I agree, this should allow the choice of more than one field of use!
Since I couldn't check 3 different I didn't mark any at all!

Recreation I guess.

Would really call it more training/practicing for self defense.

I understand that, and I'm going to parse that out in subsequent polls.  I apologize, but I'm limited to six options
If I left the poll open to multiple selections I do believe the numbers would have a slant to them.  I say this simply because, like you (and me), many people use rifles for more than one purpose

Right now I left it to a single option, and those attending the poll can chose the option that is strongest (most valuable, most meaningful) for them

Call it poor man marketing, I just wanted to pull some numbers out for our industry partners.  Just trying to help some of them out, they do a lot for us.  More than most recognize

Same.

And if I had to, I would use them for defense.

I picked Varmint because you could argue my recreational shooting is simply training for varmints.

I usually hit the range with a minimum of 3 firearms. One or two will either be an AR or AK platform rifle which is usually recreational because i've changed out a component and i'm evaluating my change. The second will be my CCW which is either a .40 or .357 depending on the week, which is for the most part training muscle memory and fine tuning fundamentals. The third will be a bolt/lever gun (around the season or when testing loads) which are my hunting rifles. I voted other because of my typical broad array of uses.

3 gun mostly by a wide margin
tactical rifle matches
plinking
load work up
training
classes

my most expensive/nicest AR is a 10.5 SBR with can for HD.

All my work guns have been provided to me so far, even the current rifles for my 'Civil' work.

For my guns, it's mostly prepping and defense; so I answered 'Recreation.'
