Like the thread title says... Anyone running a 20" inch upper with a carbine buffer tube and adjustable stock? If so, what type of spring/buffer combo are you using, and does the gun feel as smooth as a rifle tube/buffer/spring combo?

You use the carbine buffer/spring, but mines not running.. it sits in my safe until I use it.

Go with a h2 or h3 buffer. Ideally I'd say to have one of each and see which works better.

The other thing to consider is the a5 buffer system. It is a longer tube. Depending on the stock you use it might not close all of the way but for most that shouldn't matter.

I figured it would work. I'm more curious if it has any noticeable impact to felt recoil vs the standard rifle buffer kit set-up. I was also curious if a particular combo (standard carbine vs h2 buffer, standard vs extra power spring, etc.) works best to mimic the recoil of a more traditional rifle length set-up.

i built a 20" rifle gas upper for a buddy with an a5 setup , the gun shoots nice and recoil is very similar to a rifle buffer system to me.

the h6 buffer was designed for what you have in mind if you want to stick with a 7" buffer tube.  i've never shot an h6 buffer setup with a 20" rifle length gas upper so i can't comment on how it feels compared to a rifle buffer system.

I own a couple of 20" barreled rifles running a standard carbine buffer.  No functional issues.

Same as above post. Rifle type upper 20" on carbine lower with carbine buffer. Never had a problem in 25 years.

I'm sure there should be no functional issues, I just wonder if the rifle buffer isn't smoother shooting due to the longer spring. The laws of physics, I believe, would indicate that the longer spring will dampen the recoil impulse by spreading it over a longer mass, but what I don't know is if it is a perceptible amount.

I'm trying to build a low budget yet super soft shooting AR. I can't afford a lightweight BCG or anything fancy, but a rifle buffer assembly is easily affordable.

24" 6.5G/rifle length gas/ whatever basic carbine spring, worked fine.  Have a T3 buffer in it currently.

Also use the lower for a 18" .223/rifle gas.

.223 uses 45gr to 90gr bullets
6.5g uses 90gr to 147gr bullets.

The answer is the VLTOR A5 system (which has a proprietary receiver extension tube and buffer lengths), and if not then the H6 buffer. Check out the H6 system at Damage Industries

I've got a 20" that was mated to a carbine lower.

The lower had a typical carbine buffer and spring and I didn't experience any problems in that configuration.

However at no point did it "run" let alone walk or crawl.

My SA20 came with an H2 buffer:

Bottom is the SA20 lower.  Pretty sure the work rifle also uses an H2 but I'll have to check that next time I get a chance.....now I'm curious because I've never really paid any attention to that.

That is a really fine setup.

So...

A question...

Is a standard carbine buffer system 100% reliable with a rifle upper?

I'm curious about slapping an A2 upper on a carbine lower.
