Hadn't ever paid attention to this part of a rifle. It seems like 9/10 rifle pics out there have at least the Magpul poly/alum upgrade here. In the few years I've been shooting my rifles, I haven't noticed the standard guard as an issue.

What are the benefits of the Magpul upgrade? What scenarios make the standard guard a poor option (I have thinner but long finger so never had a problem, even with gloves)? Certain shooting positions? Extended shooting weekends? Thicker gloves?

I got an "enhanced" Wilson Combat trigger guard because I thought it looked better. No other reason.

Aesthetics, and clearance for those of us with sausage fingers and bulky gloves.

There's a small gap between the grip and trigger guard that abrades the skin on my middle finger, and most trigger guards fill this gap to relieve the pain. Other reasons? Just because; they look cool; several are easier to install because they don't use roll pins.

I hate roll pins.

Magpul metal, it just feels more comfortable, can't explain how.

As stated: (1) fixing "the gap"; (2) gloves, especially in winter. I like the polymer Magpul because it is actually more rugged than most of the metal ones. Will not bend, but will absorb impact. A bent trigger guard can put a rifle out of commission if you are not able to swing it down due to damage.

I like the KAC. It doesn't do anything a mil-spec trigger guard won't do other than look cooler.

I didnt mind the Magpul but prefer the KAC. That being said a well made billet with and integral guard trumps them all and thats what I buy now.

I like the ugly mofo RRA, they are not visually appealing, but they work good with gloves.

I went with this one on my last build and I'm very happy with it. Fit/finish is very nice and hard to beat for 9.45 shipped.

It looks cool for me. According to magpul the main claim for it is for users with gloves. I wear gloves but they are shooting gloves not winter gloves so I haven't felt a difference between the standard vs magpul.

I like the look of the CORE 15 version. They offer it in three versions, solid, with three holes, and with a slot. I have the slotted version.

After I put this together for my son's birthday, he became partial to the Knight's version. I think the KAC looks good with billet lowers.

As others have noted, from our end it's mainly about looks.

Filling the gap was my reason for upgrading. Even though I only got the Magpul polymer, it still feels more solid, secure and comfy. Really feels much better without the gap.

I have a "winter" trigger guard (Blackhawk, maybe?). It helps a LOT up here when the weather sucks, and you're shooting with big gloves on. Same reason why I love my PPQ. Plenty of space in there.

Like the magpul poly. For anyone that has shot a lot, the know how painful that finger gap is and any of the aftermarket ones should fill that nicely.

Or of all my rifles only one has a different trigger guard, a Colt magpul package. Never really thought it was a part that needed upgrading so never have on any of my other rifles, including work guns.

I used to get the Magpul version for the gap, but the BCM Gunfighter pistol grips have a nice little tab that covers the gap, so I don't see the point to spending the money in the future.

Yes! The gap is terrible. It REALLY will kill your middle finger after a days worth of shooting.

stay away from the Core 15 Hole trigger guard, I have it on almost every AR I own, and it makes it easier to know it's mine.

i like my poly magpul. it's easier on my finger and find it more comfortable.. specially if i have to wear gloves (which i usually do)

My LMT doesn't have a gap with the standard trigger guard. Probably the reason I don't see much of the fuss on replacing one.

Dead On Arms trigger guards for me. NO roll pin (spring detents at all corners):

Installs (and removes) in seconds. 7075 Forged. $22. I'll NEVER use anything else ever again.

Magpul here; has the KAC prior, the Dead Arms one looks just like the Magpul one, but with the push pins,which makes it a hella better to install (and remove) without ripping the ears of the lower.

Never had a problem with the stock guard, nor it binding into my finger. This is on a S&W M&P15T with Hogue grip.

In short, get it, if it suits/tickles your fancy.

I do prefer the enlarged trigger guards, it is a personal preference. But I do hate the roll pen, so I got rid of them:

Molon Labe trigger guard: screw assembled. Billet or polymer versions available.

I have also been enjoying adding a little personality to some of my rifles:

Looks cool and easier to install with "no roll pin" models. In that order. Living in warmer climes, I have never had an ergo nomic problem with stock trigger guards
