What's the story on these? Just got a new one in the wrapper and was told it's some super secret unicorn piece or something? There's the surefire warning label thing I've got on other surefire muzzle pieces on the plastic bag, but nothing with a part number etc like my others....

The "story" is that the four prong variant was designed and manufactured at the request of the military in conjunction with the SOCOM-RC suppressor for the SOPMOD program.

Before the commercial release, Surefire redesigned the flash suppressor mount as a three-prong design, known as the SF3P, which is supposed to be slightly more efficient at eliminating flash, as well as having stronger tines.  While the FH556RC was never released for commercial sales, because the military contract specifications were for the four pronged version, it is supposedly produced for military contracts only.  Because of this, there are extremely few in civilian hands, though they show up from time to time.

Quick Webflis search pulls up that one, as well as the 215A, and 71216 REV A, whatever that is.
I have two in my possession, one pinned on my M4A1 Block II Clone, and one for my CQBR Block II when I finish it.

Thanks! Exactly what I was looking for.

So any thoughts on value?

What I've read on them basically echoes Augee's post.

I'm paraphrasing someone from an older thread.  Basically, SF changed the design from 4 prongs to 3.  .Mil said they wanted the 4 prong design.  SF said the new 3 prong design was stronger and a better FH. Despite this .mil insisted on the 4 prong design and got it.

In short, the 3 prong design is better but the 4 prong ones have scarcity value.  Some dude on the EE had a couple for sale this summer at below 3-prong MSRP.  Guess y'all missed out

Well damn, I've been looking for a FH-556-RC for a while now but it sounds like this one is going on eBay so the market can decide the price. I can get SF3P's for $100.00 so I'm going to bow out.

Good luck, who knows maybe you will get $200~300.00 out of it. Link me the ad when it goes up please.

The scarcity value got me! I was ready to just buy a 3p, but the 4 prong popped up at just the right (or wrong haha) time..
My PWS comp was the casualty.

The average price of any suppressor mount is in the range of $100 each, including the SF3P.  The Vortex is only capable of mounting a post-2009 GemTech HALO or an SEI.

Basing a $1,000 suppressor purchase on saving $60 on the muzzle device seems a little bit like the tail wagging the dog.

Scarcity will always bring the price up, how much will depend on the market and the buyers.

You gotta love the fact that the 3p is a better, more effective device....but because "only" the military can get the less effective 4 prong, it's more desirable and expensive.

Mine was ~$108, so the Smith is $10.80? Seems like a cheap FH to me.

Several years ago B.E.MEYERS licensed their design to SureFire.  Several four prong SureFire models include BEM patented designs.  If it has teeth, SureFire pays BEM royalties.

More like you can find a Vortex for $30 and people are claiming this "rare" Surefire is worth $300

Right here on the equipment exchange.  I've bought a couple myself for $25 each in like new condition, and I've seen a dozen more for $30 each.  Not all of us shop at your local gun shop where a Smith Vortex is $74.95 + tax.

Why would you put a link to the archived page.?
My comment wasn't even to you.
I'd just like to know where I can get a S.V. like that poster said.
I'm talking about from a vendor. Not some guy selling one on the EE
I'm done with this thread, sir.

I haven't bought anything from a LGS in years. Haven't thought about the EE. I was thinking online vendor. Thanks  for actually answering  the question honestly.

OOPs I lied. I did buy a coated cleaning rod at the LGS that does my FFL transfers.
