I am working on a IDF type rifle, from what I gather an a1 flash hider should be correct on a pencil barrel.  What would have been correct for behind it?  Lock washer, peel washer or crush washer?

It sounds like you're doing an early-ish rifle, so a lock washer would be appropriate.

Neat.  How did you go about removing the handguard ribs for the tape switch?

For a second there, I said, "Whoa, an A2 carbine in the IDF! Unpossible!"

Then I looked closer. Looks like an A1 receiver with an A2 sight grafted on. Interesting. But damn it, I wanted to Izzy-fy my A2 carbine.

Now that there is interesting. I was under the impression that the Israelis didn't have A2 carbines. Could it be a re-purposed receiver from an A2 rifle mated to an M4 barrel? I'm fairly sure they did obtain A2 rifles, and the Israelis are as prolific as the USAF when it comes to mixmaster M-16s.

Here's a couple of tips for the IDF elastic handguard and stock bands:

1) Turn the bands inside-out and use your wife's good fabric scissors (you'll know which ones they are when she starts screaming) to carefully trim off the excess material near the seams. Don't get TOO close to the stitching. Then carefully use a lighter to lightly singe the raw edges (it's synthetic, the loose threads will melt). With that excess fabric gone you'll have less of a bulge under the seams when you put them on.

2) Put the black stock band on first, position it where you want it, then use an Exacto or razor blade to cut a tiny slit where the band is bulging over the stock hinge pin head. Push the band around the slit until the hinge pin head pops through. Then do the same with the green band (do NOT cut the slit before you put the bands on - they're elastic, and when you put them on they'll stretch and that slit will be huge, which is why I'm glad I bought a spare). This will get rid of that ugly bulge over the pin and anchor the bands in place. If you're feeling courageous, you can do the lighter trick to clean up the resulting loose threads around the hinge pin.

Here are pictures. DISCLAIMER: if you think you'll cut or burn yourself or ruin your six dollar bands, don't do this.

Decided to give the Windham barrel a try.

Had a pretty good deal on the barrel kit so I jumped.

My version of an IDF clone, question where can I get an IDF type sling and what
kind of bayonet do they issue if at all?

I have a single Sabre Defence 16" chrome lined 1/7 midlength barrel I used on a build.  Had I known then what I know now, I'd have bought a dozen of their barrels.  It cant do anything but stack round after round into tiny little holes.

I don't know about the bayonet, I'd assume the M7 bayonet but I could be wrong.

You would need a 14.5" barrel and yours looks like a 16".

The sling, a company called Zahal sells them.

There is a lot of debate about 'early M4's' being A2's. I have read enough that I believe that really was the case - although some will argue that it wasn't an 'M4' but a model 727. Regardless, A2 uppers with M4 barrels are a real thing -whether it was put together by Colt or assembled by the Israelis hardly matters IMO. No reason you can't build an Izzy 727 - they certainly saw (and are probably still seeing) use.

I would hardly call the first rifle KISS with an optic however that A2 is so sexy. Good work sir.

FWIW I also like the top rifle. It is still simple and effective so I'll allow it (not that I have any authority in that matter whatsoever).
