| It is my understanding that these have 10.3" barrels, KAC RIS handguards, LMT fixed rear sights on an M4A1 lower. Does anyone know if the receivers are marked or remarked as Mk18 Mod0? |
Correct: LMT buttstock: www.fbodaily.com/archive/2005/12-December/14-Dec-2005/FBO-00950382.htm LMT rear sight: www.fbodaily.com/archive/2004/04-April/14-Apr-2004/FBO-00564127.htm www.fbodaily.com/archive/2005/04-April/30-Apr-2005/FBO-00797625.htm The Carbine itself is acquired as a upper conversion and as a complete carbine. As a complete carbine the lower is a standard M4A1, and as such would be marked M4A1 and have a W serial number prefix. Colt is listed as the "sole source":

The MK18 is NSW's "CQBR". LMT has been the sole provider of the 10.5" CQBR upper . Lowers are Colt M4A1's. SEALs deploy with a standard 14.5" Colt M4 and a "CQBR" upper w/ a KAC RIS/RAS. Most of them will have the LMT BUIS, LMT/Crane Stock, Aimpoint M2's or a ACOG w/ a J-Point and everything else that is offered in the SOPMOD package. The Navy has recently issued the CQBR's as complete rifles to Navy EOD. I believe that is when you started to see the Colt shorty's along with the LMT's. |
Some are marked as such- www.navy.mil/management/photodb/photos/060128-N-4374S-001.jpg |
They don't come from Colt that way. That is custom engraving job of some sort, the standard Colt MK18 CQBR upper, with the LMT buttstock and rear sight, as provided as per the links I posted earlier, and on a custom engraved late 60's or 70's lower receiver. ETA, don't see a rear roll pin on the handguards, must be a RIS? |
That looks like a Colt upper in those pics . . . . |
Note the T-markings on the side of the KAC rail? Interesting. I suppose you could letter them anywhere, but I do not recall having seen them at 3 or 6. |
|
Here are some more pictures of older MK18's taken in the first half of 2003 during a State side SEAL training exercise. The uppers are Colt MK18's that are circa 2002 or prior manufacturer (CAF forge code), lowers are modern Colt or at least FN, LMT rear sight and buttstock, and you can see these are RIS handguards, right side mag well is unmarked, unlike the other Navy picture just posted: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/7c/NavalSpecialWarfare1.jpg upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/eb/NavalSpecialWarfare2.jpg I have pictures of older ones without the LMT parts. |
Good eye, the T numbers run backward, that is a RIS. |
All the high res pics I have show Colt uppers. |
That isn't a SEALs MK18. That is a newer rifle that is issued to the Navy Ships boarding Teams. |
I believe the RIS also is done on the odd numbers (like the photo) where the RAS is in the reverse direction on the even numbers. |
|
The information I had and double checked on is this; first CQBRs were made from chopped Colt M4 barrels (also an enlarged gas port) Colt also then supplied 10.3" barrels also, LMT supplies some 10.5" uppers I know S-1 has stated that only LMT supplies the CQBR uppers, but are we debating sematics? Or something else? |
How can you tell? What is it then? And why would they mark it "MK18" ? thanks in advance. |
Some of the "newer" ones don't have the LMT Buttstock and rear site. It's up to the individual SEAL if he wants to use the standard Colt stock or the LMT. Same with the BUIS. Both the KAC RAS and RIS are in use. How can you tell if an upper is a Colt or a LMT from the tiny pictures? That platoon might have been issued some of the M4's that were cut down to "CQBR" length early on. Those photos are pretty old. |
How can you tell? What is it then? And why would they mark it "MK18" ? thanks in advance. Navy Warships have VBSS Teams that do most of the "compliant" boardings now. That is one of their MK18's. I never said that it wasn't a MK18. |
When you expand the picture, you can see the Colt forging codes. |
Most of my other MK18 pics are older, with the Crane rather then LMT stocks, and KAC rather then LMT rear sights. Those pictures are all freaking huge, your computer is shrinking them down to fit the screen. |
Does look like a newer upper, looks to be a current C keyhole forge code. |
a 10.5"-er ! I love that look. I had read that (Colt) barrels less than 11.5" were finicky shooters. Those who use these on a professional basis cannot afford to have them choke at a bad time. But I suppose the right armorer can tweak the gas port in a way that they behave properly. |
Grant should be along in a minute to tell you... he sold the stocks
|
Haha, hopefully he does come along. Now that I look at it twice, that looks like the Vltor rail. |
As they say "A little bird told me" . . . .

Those are my boys!!! I won EODGRU2 bid for the Magpul M93B. I think I might cry, please give me a moment. ![]() C4 |
Guns, it looks like them might be running single point slings (with HK snap hooks). C4 |

Found these in a discussion at another Forum. forums.military.com/groupee/forums/a/tpc/f/2741923366/m/4700014910001/p/1 ![]() ![]() A lot of different Carbines floating around! Also, makes me wonder how many of the Carbines in the field are in USGI form, and how many are modified at the unit or field level. In my research on the Pre-M4 Carbines, I have found plenty that were modified at the unit or field level. Thanks to everyone for sharing the info. Congrats to Grant. "Capt Richardson" |
seasoned veterans? Hell, they can't be trusted with a magazine yet! and to keep OT, a shameless photo ![]() BIG-ASSED HI-RES And another ![]() BIG-ASSED HI-RES |
