Anyone nailed down a good BC with field data for the 123gr eld-m? View Quote 1/8 twist should maximize .506 G1/ .255 G7 The 123gr AMAX (replaced by the 123gr ELD-M) was listed at .510 G1, but Litz had it at .468 G1. That .468 G1 number was 4" high at 1000yds for me with correct atmospheric conditions input into my program. I normally use G7 if there is G7 data available, but there wasn't G7 for it at the time. For comparison, the 123gr SMK is .522 G1/.260 G7 per Litz. These are static drag model-based BCs of course. Twist rate will affect BC in my experience, and since Grendel barrels normally have tight twist, you get the full BC possible from gyroscopic stability that might normally degrade with a looser twist. |

Now I am regretting just buying the upper to save funds for the mags and ammo... Thanks LRRPF52!
ETA: seriously I wonder how many LaRue 6.5g you were responsible for selling. Mark should include you in the company Christmas card photo for sure |

Ammo was delivered today
waiting on a call back from UPS, they already admitted delivering to the wrong addreess mostly worried because 2 uppers are out for delivery tomorrow. --- UPS came through with the recovery today. 2 letters got transposed on my shipping lable, so they sent it somewhere randomly different in town. Computer did not recognize my street, so Main Street is the most logical choice apparently. |

I was thinking about the same since I have an ultimate 6.5 upper on the way, but I'm not sure I see the point; granted, I'm a total 6.5 noob. I figure just about anyone who owns an AR in 6.5 probably has at least one other AR in a common caliber for which cheap ammo is available when you want to plink or what have you. Does the steel case perform well enough to still take advantage of the 6.5's capabilities? My first guess would be that the range and accuracy good 6.5 ammo from a Larue would give would be lost with steel ammo and a bargain barrel. I'm basically asking, why shoot 6.5 for casual, non-precision shooting in the first place? View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

That will open up to 2-3 inch groups with crappy wolf ammo, but it's no more expensive than 556 and within 250 yards on hogs, who cares? They're pretty violent rounds. Total length with the TQ it shorter than the 18" version for hunting deer with 123 SSTs and is basically point and shoot out to 250 and should hold a sub 5" group. For anything further I have heavier rifles. |

6.5 Grendel SBR is the most potent compact AR15 package currently available. 10.5" gives you expansion out to 260yds with the 123gr SST, and 700yds with the 129gr ABLR, which is more than twice the distance you would engage medium game at in most cases. The 10.5" 6.5 Grendel with 129gr ABLR maintains 900ft-lbs of energy out to just over 275yds, and 800ft-lbs to almost 375yds if you care about ft-lbs. 11.5" with a 129gr ABLR gives you: 100yds 2066fps 1223ft-lbs 200yds 1928fps 1065ft-lbs 300yds 1796fps 924ft-lbs 400yds 1671fps 800ft-lbs 12.5" 129gr ABLR 425yds 1674fps 802ft-lbs 123gr SST at 2320fps mv 300yds 1816fps900ft-lbs 375yds 1702fps 791ft-lbs Just for reference using a 20" barreled .30-30 with a 150gr RN Hornady: 175yds 1599fps 852ft-lbs 200yds 1515fps 764ft-lbs I would love to see something cool for a nice little hunting upper with a 12.5" LaRue pipe for the Stealth. Most of the guys and gals that have 24", 20", 18", 16", and 12.5" Grendels end up reaching for the 12.5" the most. Gunwritr says he has no problems putting down the LaRue targets at 550yds. When I first let my nephews shoot my 16" Grendel with 90gr TNT, it flattened my 12" poppers at 300yds like a boss, totally different experience than 5.56 with hot Mk.262. Running DM Courses with poppers at distance, we had to hammer (really fast double-tap) the heads at 200 to 300m to get the plates to fall, otherwise you just hear a little "plink" and barely see the popper move. 7.62 NATO would send the plates flying head over heel at those distances when we placed them for partial exposures on the backside of berms, but the shooter doesn't get to see his impact because the gun came off sight picture and muzzle blast was disorienting (shooting from field positions other than prone on the timer), and the rifles weigh 1.5x the AR15 at least. What I started to see in practical terms was that the AR15/6.5 Grendel handled more like a 5.56 with a little more recoil, but hit a lot more like a 7.62 NATO. Recoil is half that of a 7.62 NATO even when you use the same weight rifles. It's like Goldilocks. http://i1085.photobucket.com/albums/j422/LRRPF52/2012-10-20132549.jpg View Quote I'm planning on mounting a 1.5x ACOG to it for an optic. 1-8x in the tOBR for the 18" barrel (which I may shorten down to 14.5 or 16"). |

View Quote There's a disconnect with those who are still in the 1900s world (I used to be just as guilty) where we looked at muzzle velocity and bullet weight alone, and assumed certain capabilities of rifles that way. There were only 2 main places in the Nation that had doppler radars, and they were military facilities with data not really exposed to the civilian world, so a lot about actual bullet flight path and external ballistics could only be seen through trial and error, and most people didn't have access to the types of ranges where they could see trajectory on targets with some way of compensating for drop and wind. With the advent of ballistics programs in your phone, a wealth of tested BC data, known twist rates, atmospheric measuring devices commonly available, we can determine a heck of a lot about a bullet's flight path, energy, deflection, impact speed, etc. With lots of shared results on actual game and ballistics testing, we get to see a more clear picture forming about how bullets perform in tissue. Short story is 6.5mm bullets don't care so much about how fast they are shot, they just like to keep flying as fast as they can, so retained energy and impact speed at distance for a hunter with an SBR are a lot more than one would assume based on the old way of thinking. Look at that 20" .30-30/150gr RN example again good and hard. The numbers don't make sense if you aren't looking at how the projectiles are shaped. Once you see one is shaped like a blunt rock, and the other like an arrow, it starts to make sense. |

I can't help wondering exactly what the small run was, numbers wise? Are there 150, 300, 1000? I'd be interested to see how many FDE Grendel complete rifles there will be/are. I've been fol lowing the website to see when they take Grendel down or off, so far I still see it as available. When I called, I was told I was in on the initial run. Curiosity has my cats attention I guess.
Also interested if there will be a way to distinguish later if a particular FDE rifle is the actual complete rifle or an ultimate upper on a seperate lower offering? Part of my reason for buying the rifle after I bought the upper kit was that the Rifles may one day be a hot collector piece. - you know, like all of Larue's other stuff... |
|
Yes I feel kind of shafted. It was "small run" kinda flet like I was going to be in the cool kids club lol.. dose not look so small.. shoot.. the upper kit is $900 cheaper assumable and test fired.. all you are missing is a lower and a 30mm scope mount.
|
|
The argument I'm sure some are going to put forth is that the real deal on the rifles were the discounts on the extras......but it does make one wonder the true drivers behind the decisions. We all know it's a down market for manufacturers while the parts and build you own suppliers all seem to be out of stock of all of the important stuff. There is one guy who knows, and I'm guessing he won't spill the beans. One thing I would really be surprised to see is a stripped lower offering. I know in business you need to be willing to cannibalize yourself, or someone else will do it for you, but a move like that would rally piss off those who are bearly keeping a happy face on in the light of the upper offer.

View Quote I did then go ahead and get the entire rifle, precisely BECAUSE it was supposed to be a "small run" - with the additional benefit of the free mount, the DEAL on the 5.56 cartridge - which I sprang for - and the HELL of a deal on the TranQ - which I also sprang for - (and has already shipped; Wait, what?) If it turns out some day that the only way to tell my full rifle was originally bought that way is because I remember about it, that is fine. I don't ever intend on selling it anyway. But, the "cool kids club" is what I thought I was buying into by getting the whole rifle. (This may all be a moot point, as the Grendels may soon start showing up black - hey guys, I told you to get in early, the FDE was a small run!, or some such...) The only thing I didn't do was get the included optic offer, (a quick google search turned up that the optic was selling for the same price the day I bought the gun - hey call me a discerning consumer!), so since I wanted to put my own optic on it anyway I forwent springing for that piece... I'll wait for months for a Larue - and never whine about that. (I may post about my excited anticipation... ok I may whine someday, sue me. ) I DO want a Grendel Larue bumper sticker and morale patch though, this would be great. Maybe even a Grendel owners Xmas ornament this year... I'd even buy those too. ... maybe a Grendel dillo - green with big teeth... a Grendel Dillo flag I can fly in my yard... heh this could get fun... |

View Quote Mark seems to be one of the few masters in creating scarcity with limited offers, and demand. The serial number range of the lowers is one way they can nail down what it was and when it was made. Given the number of companies responding to 6.5 Grendel demand over the years, and the fact that the ammunition support for it is so substantial, it isn't going away. Many SHOT Shows ago, a guy from Hornady said that 6.5 Grendel was already their 3rd most popular caliber behind .223 Rem and .308 Win. It's a very distant 3rd, but still was 3rd at that time. I saw a recent article discussing % of AR15s chambered in .223 Rem, and it said 10% of AR15s are now chambered in some other cartridge. It was either Impact Magazine or American Riflemen. I'll have to find the article. One thing is certain though, and that is that ever since Colt introduced the 7.62x39 Sporter AR15, people started to look at the AR15 as a legitimate medium game hunting cartridge. 6mm PPC guys saw the Colt x39 Sporter bolt, and said, "Hey, this thing could work with the PPC for NRA high-power." From these roots, the hunting and target-shooting capabilities of the AR15 frame evolved, with the 6.5 Grendel embodying both of those in one. You end up with an 18" barreled AR15 that will no-BS reach out past what most .308s will for target work, and hit way harder than 7.62x39 or even the big bores at 200yds on game, with a lot of ogive length to peel back for mushrooming. It offers a lot of capability for multiple uses for a receiver set that has insane amounts of support across furniture, triggers, recoil systems, and the sea of after-market support that share commonality. With the steel case now on the market, popularity has increased tremendously. Another recent factory load is here bringing the total of factory ammo options to 48. I've had exceptional results from Hornady for years now, and they continue to innovate with the cartridge by expanding their line with it and the recent Hornady Black 123gr ELD-M. It's also one of the very few cartridges that has the following support: SAAMI standardized CIP Standardized Steel case Federal Gold Medal Match (new for 2017, 130gr Berger Hybrid OTM) There are only a handful of cartridges that have that kind of market support, namely .223 Rem, .308 Win., and .30-06 Springfield. |

Thanks for letting us newbies pick your brain! View Quote From what I have seen over the years in other products from JP, they're one of the few companies who I actually have a high degree of confidence in. I do know that people who own JP Grendels love them, with a higher-than-average satisfaction rate than many others, and it reflects in the workmanship and price. The only bolts I have used are: AA standard bolt dating back to 2009 Maxim/Precision Firearms bolts AA hard use bolts with balanced lug design, surface deposition coating Just recently this LaRue complete rifle I also got one of the group buy bolts we did through the forum, which are 9310, correct OAL, correct face depth, several nice features we spec'd on them. I know for my 5.56 blasters, I have kept spares whenever possible, and even when I was still active duty, I kept spares. 5.56 is the only bolt I have broken so far, on a reputable upper that I shot through a pretty tortuous shoot schedule. Cracked the cam pin hole at well over 10k. The 6.5 Grendel runs at a much lower chamber pressure (most factory ammo we've tested in instrumented metering system with correct placement of gauges over the center of the powder column shows a consistent range around 49,500psi from Hornady). MAP of the Grendel is 50ksi in the AR15, so you get a lot of benefits in longevity with throat and barrel life, without needing to push things since the BC of the projectiles hauls the majority of the weight for you. |
