Quick range summary and comments:
Got it home last night, no scope yet, took my Trijicon 1-4 Acccupower off of my 556 OBR and mounted it to the 762. The Accupower is sighted in at 100 yards with 55 grain ammo.
Once over on the rifle, looked at all of the details and it is very well made, better balance than my LMT MWS. The A2 stock is different for me, my last A2 stock rifle was 10 years ago. Interesting it came with a PRI charging handle, first I seen of one of these, very well made.
Decided to break down the rifle and this is where the appreciation for the LT machining and fitting process starts....the upper to lower fit was the tightest I have ever seen. I thought my early on (2005) RRAs were tight but this rifle is off the chart. I actually thought the rear take down pin was not disengaging all the way. After getting the rifle apart and removing the BC, I was amazed at the machining and finish. Almost too pretty to dirty up. I am a Machinery Engineer, retired from XOM oil company and still working for a smaller company. I deal with close tolerances, machining, fit and assembly for a living and can appreciate the quality of the LT BC and rifle.
It had some lubrication, but I added Slip 2000 EWL for good measure, quick swab with light oil down the barrel. Putting the rifle back together was interesting. I had to remove the scope and use a heavy rag and light taps with a rubber mallet, nothing significant, but just using my hands was not going to get me proper take down pin alignment for assembly. This is a very tight fit and the way I like these rifles. Will add a nylon punch and small rubber hammer to my range tool bag.
Went to the range this morning, the Accupower was mounted, rear eyepiece even with the charging handle. I brought a 10 round PMag and three different kinds of ammo. Hornady 168 gran match, Blackballs 168 grain and some FGMM 7.62 175 grain.
Set my target at 50 yards, not shooting for accuracy and not knowing where the Accupower was going to hit, I just wanted to get a feel for the rifle. Loaded up the Hornady first, 5 rounds, first round was 1" high, 1" left, second round was basically the same hole, next three rounds delivered a 3/4" group. I did not touch the scope, made no adjustments. This is pretty good, rifle to rifle. The BH was next, again 5 rounds, same group size, basically the same quadrant, 10:00. Then I tried the 175 7.62 FGMM. This ammo grouped in the upper right quadrant and produced a 1/2" group.
Shooting was done with a LT/Harris bipod, no rear bag support, just my weak side hand under the A2 stock. As far as the height of the scope vs the A2 stock, I feel good about this. Reading about the additional rail height of the OBR I did have some concerns, but with the LT 104 mount sitting 1.5" above rail, I feel this mount will work for the scope I will eventually purchase, still yet to decide on which scope.
I have a Silencerco Omega in ATF jail now, should be paroled in August, will be dedicated to this rifle. I cant wait. Overall I am very pleased with the set up, scope selection is next, trying to keep the weight down, but since this will be dedicated range/target set up, I can deal with additional bulk.
In terms of quality and first impressions, this probably the finest production rifle I have ever purchased. My LMTs are up there too, but this one edges them out.
Have a good weekend...
