I bought mine (the MOE version) from AIM after seeing these reviews and the ones from AK Operators Union. I ended up being a little let down. The little plate that holds the hammer and trigger pins in on mine isn't finished at all (shiny silver metal with rust spots), it wouldn't lock up on ANY mags (not even the PMAG that came with it) until I filed quite a bit off the top of the mag release, and it had rust all over the inside of the slant brake when I took it off. The barrel looks fine - all the rust seems to have come from the threaded portion of the inside of the brake, which looks like it is painted on the outside like the rifle but had no oil at all on the inside of it. The action spring has some kind of rust-colored lube on it that wipes off, but the retainer plate and muzzle threads had plain old rust (no lube) that won't wipe off. I removed the rusty brake and put a different one on anyway, but for a $~800 AK that is marketed as having a salt-water-corrosion-proof finish and all that, I expected it to at least be rust free out of the box and work with the mag that came with it.
I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet, but the sights and everything look straight enough. The Hungarian square front trunnion and rounded off front cap that Rob Ski pointed out are still there, so none of my AK handguards will fit it. I can live with that until I modify some nice wooden ones to fit. No biggie.
But the fact that it wouldn't even begin to latch on the mag that came with it really threw me. When you inserted the mag right out of the box, the top of the mag catch didn't even start on the ramp/lug of the PMAG (or any of the Russian, Bulgarian, Romanian, or Yugo metal mags I tried either - I tried a dozen mags in it with the same results). It hit right on the end of the lug all the way across and didn't retain it at all. You could smack the mag forward, and it would fall right out. I took a skinny flat file to the top of the mag catch and worked and worked until I got it to fit really tightly on the PMAG and my metal mags. Now, the mag catch clicks forward and fully holds them in. But I've never had to do that with any AK other than one of my cheap WASRs that was obviously built just before quitting time on Friday. Something that looks this nice and cost this much shouldn't have this issue. But it was totally fixable by anybody with a file and not worth sending it back over.
It sure looks nice, though - digging the black paint job. DDI's website has a "fill out this form to register your rifle and get two more years of warranty" page. I filled that out, and it just dumped me on a different page with no success or error message. I didn't get any confirmation email or anything either... so I am wondering if I got the extended warranty or not. I guess if I have any problems shooting it, I will find out when I call them.
ETA: I just read back over my post above and realized it sounded like I was saying not to buy it or it wasn't worth what I paid for it. It's not as nice as my Arsenal SGL Izmash-built AK, but given the fact that it doesn't cost much more than a WASR does now, I still think it's worth it. I didn't mean to sound like I was having any buyer's regret. I am happy I bought it. I just was surprised over the issues mine had right out of the box, but as I mentioned, they were totally fixable. And it looks and feels awesome. Can't wait to shoot it since it finally stopped raining here.
