CMMG has been in contact with the poster. We would like to have our customer service and engineering team take a look at the rifle used. The results in the video do not mirror the test results CMMG has experienced over the last several months of testing.
Over the last several months we have successfully ran multiple test rifles for thousands of rounds without cleaning. We would like to inspect this particular rifle, we have not experienced malfunctions of this nature, without a mechanical issue of some sort. We are confident the MK47 is a rock solid firearm in terms accuracy, reliability and durability. We stand behind our product with a lifetime manufacturer's warranty. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

Quick question...is the Mutant's charging handle proprietary, or standard AR15?
Thanks! |

Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile View Quote I posted this in the AR sections thread on the mutant and it got no reply so I'll post it here to offer feedback as a potential customer who is very interested. "No offense meant but as someone who was very excited about this rifle I would say you've still got a ways to go with the gas block issue. It seems that failed way too easily. After watching the take down video and seeing the gas block set up it looks to me as though pinning the gas block would be a far superior way to go about it. Could you install/pin the GB before the melonite process? If I may offer some feedback from a potential buyers perspecive: -To me CMMG has a great idea with an "overbuilt" design by using AR-10 sized components so why go cheap with little things like a .5.56 sized charging handle? You've got a beefier spring to compress when charging, having a larger charging handle would be a great benefit. -This rifle NEEDS to have a bolt hold open capability, even if it is only to hold the bolt open when used with Weapontech followers or to be manually locked open. This is a much needed feature IMO. -I'd like to see a forward assist on any DI rifle. Yeah, it's really never used but it's built into the design for a reason, however rare that reason may be. -I'd like to see a piston upper version as well. Out of all the AR designs in 7.62x39 this 1 has a lot of potential IMO given the "overbuilt" nature of it. But I think the above improvements would give you a stranglehold on the 7.62x39 market. Following with much interest...... " |
What length barrel would anyone like to see on an SBR/Pistol version of the Mk47?
7.5-8" PDW and 12-12.5" mini recce. I'd even be down for a 13.7" or something that would allow a KX3 krink style flashhider to be pinned for a non pistol/sbr legal 16".
Will you be offering a model without the rail so we can add our own preferred rail? |
Out of curiosity, why did CMMG decide to go with a 16" barrel as opposed to a 14.5" barrel? Will you ever sell a 14.5" barrel in the future?

View Quote Probably because people like to customize their rifles and put whatever muzzle device they want on it. It's more of a pain in the ass than most people want to deal with to switch out a pinned muzzle device. As for barrel length discussion, 8"-8.5" would be cool, but I don't know of anyone that makes a 308 size hand guard shorter than 11". Unless you're running a suppressor, that would be less than ideal in my mind. It would be cool, in my opinion, to see a 10"-12" so the muzzle device sticks out just enough from the end of the hand guard. |

Would you recommend that I pin the gas block to prevent what happened that YouTube video or is it a non-issue from your testing? Any comments or insight you could shed on the matter would be much appreciated! |
The issue with that particular rifle was that the gas block screws did not receive thread locker during the build. We have since modified our production procedure to help eliminate that possibility. Rest assured we tested many rifles with many thousands of rounds before releasing this product and none of them had a loose gas block during or after testing. This was an isolated issue that unfortunately got through our doors to a reviewer. We do not think pinning the gas block is necessary.

View Quote Just so my understanding is clear, do you use thread locker on all the Mk47s and this particular one escaped receiving the thread locker, or is the addition of the thread locker in production new since the result of this video? I just want to know as to whether or not I should add thread locker pre-emptively or if it's been done for me already by your factory. |
Sorry to Harp on the point, but anything to add CMMG? So far, I'm thoroughly impressed with the fit and finish of the rifle.

All of them get thread locker, this one slipped through. We have added more checking procedures down the line.

I just bought one off of a auction site. I think I did pretty good. Hopefully I'll have it this Thursday. My only concern is that I'm buying a rifle that is new and the reason I say that is because I think when buying the first run of a new gun sometimes you either run into problems, which it sounds like they've been worked out or improvements are made to the model gun down the road and your stuck with a gun that even though it's good the updated version is better and no one wants the original. I guess that's the price you potentially pay to be one of the first kids on the block with the new toy. I'm looking forward to getting my hands on this rifle and I will brave the now melting but still abundant snow to pull the trigger as soon as I can. I'll post a review after I get it and shoot it.

View Quote I share your sentiments exactly. The good news is that it has been tested by several prominent YouTube channels and the only negative was a loose gas block that has since been addressed. In my honest opinion opinion, if that's the only thing wrong with the rifle, I think we'll all be ok. The other good thing about this rifle is that there is very little "new tech". It uses standard AR components (shorter AR10 bolt aside), DI gas system etc. The only question I have is why CMMG didn't shorten their AR10 bolt to the length of an AR15. I understand why they shortened it, but why not take it a step further and shorten an AR10 bolt to an AR15 length so as to allow the use of standard length AR15 charging handles? Perhaps CMMG could chime in on that one? But I digress, from what I have seen from this rifle, it seems very well thought out with tried and proven components. Looking forward to warmer weather so I can shoot it. |
We went as short as we could go on the carrier; the length is a result of the receivers having to be longer to fit an AK mag's added length front-to-back along with our Mk47 bolt being based on a .308 design. Basically the carrier has to be longer to fit the receiver set and match the rest of the standard components.

I can't find any in stock from supporting dealers or the usual like Buds, etc.

Thanks for the re-review. I'm not surprised about TAPCO magazines malfunctioning. For consistency sake, I would have used Circle 10 or Warsaw Pact steel magazines for the entire review.
I was really interested in this gun until I saw the previous video of how the gas block was constructed. If there was a locking collar, similar to Knight's MOD-2 gas system, I would be fine with the set screw gas block. However, I would prefer it to be pinned in place. I find it very hard to believe that it will hold up with extended time. I don't plan on doing 1000 round torture tests like in the video, but 100-200 round sessions over a period of 3-5 years might have an effect on the compound used to hold the set screws in place. I realize the problem tapered pins pose to barrels, but they do work for their intended purpose. This rifle is not a precision weapon to begin with; it is after all, a 7.62 Soviet AR that will spend most of its time shooting steel cased Russian ammo. |
For the rest of us, should we be concerned that our rifles do not have this new compound on the gas block? Does CMMG advise sending them back?
I got mine the other day. I haven't shot it yet but it looks real nice. One thing I noticed, the compensator is screwed on tight but the cut outs aren't at 3'oclock and 9 or 12 and 6. They're at 11 and 5. Is this okay? Should they line up side to side or up and down? Other than that it looks and feels great. I ordered some sights and rail covers and will probably get it out next week. I'll definitely update with a range report. Also when did cmmg put the better lock tite on the gas block? My serial number is just shy of 300. Any answers to these questions would be appreciated. Thanks a lot.
Cmmg can you comment on the compensator and loctite question ? Thanks

We just switched to a higher temp thread locker on the gas block and our apologies for the compensator timing, shoot Tech Support an email and they will take care of you.

The thread compound we were previously using worked fine for any normal conditions; it only came loose under one specific torture test producing very high heat. If you do in fact have an issue with your gas block screws coming loose let Tech Support know and we will take care of you.

Any thought given to developing a larger charging handle for this weapon?

We do not have a rifle buffer designed yet, the spacer might work but we cannot confirm for sure because we have not tested that setup.

It's a proprietary buffer and in between the length of an AR15 buffer and 308 buffer. They haven't released a rifle buffer for it at this time. I haven't tried it myself yet, but the spacer should work using the Mk47 carbine buffer and spring in a rifle tube as long as the spacer is the correct length. |
