Apparently the process for building a polymer rail cover is tantamount to the construction of the Hubble Space Telescope. It's been the better part of 2014 and at this point it doesn't appear we'll see them available this year.
The KMR rails have a rather fragile finish to it that is apparently due to the magnesium alloy material used, which gives it its light weight. These rail covers are something I've been requiring for some time, but it looks like I'll be using them more to cover the scratches on my rail than to protect them from being scratched to shit in the first place. A number of reasons could have caused the delay and since BCM hasn't wanted to disclose why all we can do is guess and wonder out loud if we'll see them before another lighter/stronger rail is released by someone else and we move on from the KMR.
What I've learned about keymod is that it's not as standardized as I had hoped. The different geometries of the rails and the various thicknesses of said rails means that keymod parts like rail covers are not as "plug n play" as I had hoped they would be. Reports are that the NSR and KAC rail covers sit loose on the KMR. I had an IWC handstop come off and mar my KMR rail's keymod slot where it was attached during a real light range session.
I like the rail overall still due its unparalled weight savings, but I'm a sad panda over not having my rail covers going into 2015 here. If anyone sees them at SHOT please impress upon them the strong desire by KMR owners and BCM supporters to have the ability to purchase rail covers that fit the KMR rail.
