I have used the receiver face squaring tool on all of them and they weren't way off, nor were they off when I checked the top rail for flatness. I'll admit, that's all I know to do, so I might be really missing something.
I have only received one blem upper from BCM that had visual blemishes, and it was towards the rear on the top. Looked like something had been bolted to the picatinny rail loosely and ripped off. The anodizing was scratched through, but it cleaned up and has worked fine.
