I've been looking into the Mossberg MVP Patrol in .223. A bolt action .223 that takes Ar15 type magazines and can handle 5.56 pressures sounds awesome. Problem is, a lot of these rifles seem to have VERY wobbly seating of magazines. This causes the rounds to be presented at inconsistent angles and results in lots of double feeds and sometimes even causes the bolt to move forward over the top round without stripping it from the magazine and leaving an empty chamber.
Ar15 magazines are designed to be seated in Ar15 magwells, which are much deeper than on most other rifles. The depth of the Ar15 magwell is what prevents magazines from wobbling around while seated and ensures that the top round is always presented at the same angle.
So:
The malfunctions in the Mossberg MVP .223 are caused by rounds being presented at inconsistent angles.
The rounds being presented at inconsistent angles is caused by the magazine being able to wobble too much while seated.
The magazine wobbling too much while seated is caused by the shallow mag well taking mags that were designed for deep mag wells.
Therefore MagPul should make a Hunter Stock for the Mossberg MVP with a deeper mag well that is more similar to the Ar15's mag well.
I'll accept payment for this idea in the form of a lifetime supply of free MagPul stuff. Thanks.
