If you have a choice which do you carry (on duty)?

[#1]
I would choose .40 over 9mm for duty gun, if I had a choice.  But I don't have a choice, so I carry a .45

ETA: I have a Glock 27 .40 that I am qualified to use on duty as well.

What kind of ammo does the department provide?

.40 is a better LE duty round. It performs better against barriers, whether it be glass/windshields, etc. In LE you stand a significantly higher chance of having to engage a suspect in a vehicle or through glass/ a barrier then your typical civilian in a SD situation or even your typical soldier in a combat situation.

I carry .40 on duty and 9mm for CC/off duty.

I have a choice of 9, 40 or 45.

So I chose a 1911 ;)

G35 in .40S&W is what I'm issued and comfortable with.

A hit with a 9mm beats a miss with anything else. Its cheaper to practice with the 9mm so I'd choose the 9mm....and that's what my department issues.

We can pick and the 9 is the most popular.

It depends when you ask me. Usually I will say .40 because its what the 'experts' in the FBI said is best 20 years ago........ Recently I read studies where they are saying 9 is better overall. Two things I like about 9s are round capicity and what I hear about smoother recoil. I personally would trust either to get the job done.

I am issued a 40 so I made a decision to make all my personal Glocks 40s because its the round i practice with so often.   I dont have a problem witht he recoil and making fast follow up shots with 40s and thats on stress courses while on the move almost running. But I am actually planning on getting a Glock 9 soon to try the caliber out and if I prefer it over a 40 ill start carrying it instead as my personal gun. At work my department makes that decision for me and until further notice its the 40!!! So I could be 50/50 here soon.

Glock 22 on duty.  SW Shield 9mm off duty because its very concealable.

Im issued a G17 and required to carry it. I like the weapon and 9mm and if I had a choice between 9mm and .40 I would pick 9mm. I wouldnt complain about .40 either though. A pistol round is a pistol round imo. Do your part (put accurate rds on target fast) the best you can and you wont know the difference

All of this, but issued 9mm and fine with it. If I had a choice I would probably still choose 9mm.

We issue Glock 22's with Winchester Ranger 165grain (I carry a personal Glock 35 using the agency issued ammo).

That being said, I would carry a 9mm if given the choice.  Anything I can do with the .40, I can do with the 9mm faster and more accurately at speed.  Never had to shoot anyone yet, but if that time comes, I want whatever gives me the advantage in speed, accuracy and the ability to effectively put multiple rounds of an adequate caliber on target quickly.  For me that is the 9mm.  But. that's only my opinion.

I'm going through this right now. In the past, you could carry whatever you wanted, within policy. We got a new Chief a couple years ago and he mandated issued guns, which were Gen4 G22s. After about 6 months, we got another new Chief and he really doesn't care what we carry, so it is slowly going back to carrying what we want.

Before we went to issued guns, I was carrying an old, personally owned G21. With the advances in duty ammo (especially 9mm), I bought a G19 to carry. We then went to the G22s before I ever got a chance to qualify with or carry the G19. Now, with the new Chief, I'm going to carry my G19 when we go out and qualify again. I carry a Shield 9mm for backup and off duty, so it is a good pairing.

I may well be preaching to the choir here, but with the advances in duty ammo, as long as you use GOOD ammo, there really isn't any real difference between 9mm, .40 and .45 anymore. 9mm allows more ammo per mag, lower recoil, quicker follow up shots and cheaper practice ammo in the event you have to buy your own. If I were stuck with old style HP ammo, I'd go back to my G21, but I'm buying good ammo for the PD now (all calibers are Gold Dot; 124+P for 9mm, 180 for .40 and 230gr for .45), so why not go to the 9mm?

I'm issued a Glock 21sf. I would have had no problem had I been issued the 17. My dept issues 17,21 and the 22. Just so happened I was issued a NIB 21sf. My partner was issued a 17. I could switch if I wanted to... But I'm happy with the 21.

Eta: issued duty ammo is 230gr Fed HST's in 45. Not sure what the weights are for the 9 & 40 HST's.

9mm. Todays rounds will get the job done. More rounds in the magazine. Faster follow ups, cheaper so you can practice more. Also I think for a lot of women and men it would be a more controllable round. Hits are better than misses.

FBI is switching from 40 to 9mm for all the reasons mentioned on pg 1, few agencies/companies/governments do as much ballistic research and LE gunfighting research as the FBI

I prefer .45 but given those options only I would most likely take the 9mm...reluctantly. not so much that I dont think it will get the job done, I know it will and ive seenaa lot of people get dead via 9mm lead injection, but im just comfortable with my .45s

Within the past 2-3 months I switched completely over from .40 (23/27 gen3) to 9mm (19/26 gen4). I was a 9mm guy for 10 years before being issued .40, which I've handled fine for the past 5 years. But, given a recent opportunity to switch back to 9mm, I jumped on it and I can't tell you how happy I am about it.

Then why is the FBI and other federal agencies going back to the 9mm? With the advancement of rounds like gold dot and +p+, they are just as effective if not more so than a 40. 40 has snappy recoil, so harder follow up shots and the 40 beats the hell out of  the gun.

I can carry what I want so I have carried a 1911 in 45acp for 16 of the last 17 years. In the last year I swapped over to the STI 2011 in 9mm.  With careful ammo selection I gain 10 to 12 rounds per mag and don't lose much terminal ballistics wise, get to shoot cheaply, can engage targets faster while maintaining accuracy and, I still get it in a 1911 that's fairly light weight and slim for a double stack 1911.  As a bonus, I got a really bitchin' new gun.Win all the way around.

We were issued Glock 22 in .40, Went to Sig P220 in .45, if it were up to me I would pick 9mm.

I like the Sig and the .45 round more then the Glock and the .40 round, but I like 9mm most of all.

Regardless of round, the best thing an agency can do is get away from stupid 8lb & 12lb glock triggers, that lawyer influenced trigger sucks.

issued a Glock 22 with Ranger 165 but I recently got approved and carry my 19 with Ranger 147 RA9T (Ammo provided by department)
I still have to qual with the 22, but that's fine as long as ammo is issued.

I feel better carrying the 19 because it is easier to carry off duty as well. I also practice a lot more with the 19 at the ranch, so my confidence in it is much higher.

I shoot the 19 way better too.
Even though 147 is not my preferred load, I have seen enough information to feel confident with it.

I'm considering the same switch. More details on yours? Any issues with holsters?

I bought the 2011 Tactical 5.0.  9mm, Full rail, 5"bull barrel with recoil master recoil spring set up, Heinie straight 8 night sights, black matte finish.  Magazine capacity flush fit mag-17, 140mm mag 20.

Holsters are a pain in the ass to find for full rail guns.  Bought a couple of blade tech owb holsters for the gun with X300 attached and I fucking hate 'em.  So I wound up having a local make a Raven Phantom style owb for the gun with and without the light and use those for work in plain clothes.  I use the blade tech duty holster with hood for uniform and it's been ok after taking a dremel  and relieving near the mag release.  The Safariland roll top I have for TRP Operator and light will work with this gun I just never adjusted it up, I wanted to try something different.  Stay away from the Blade Tech mag pouches, they suck, hard.  Safariland mag pouches work, Glock 21 pouches. It's what I use on the duty belt.

My shooting partner bought the Marauder after shooting mine.  9mm, Half rail, 5" match barrel and bushing without recoil master, adjustable rear fiber optic front, Nitride finish.

He paid a couple hundred more but he can use his existing holsters with the gun and has a wider range to choose from.  His rear adjustable sight has been problematic though.  Not enough adjustment and it shoots a little high even after modification.

Both guns are reliable.  I've got 5k through mine as does my partner.  I can count the malfunctions on one hand and all were related to one group of reloads that I loaded short with a particular bullet profile and one I mangled  in the press that wouldn't chamber.  Partner had a handful with one bad mag he got with the gun that was fixed by STI under warranty.  I've gone as many as 1600 without cleaning or lubing and finally broke down and cleaned the thing because it bothered me to see the gun so filthy.

Both guns had to be modified to fit the X300 lights.  Checkering on the front of the trigger guard had to be removed to fit the DG switch on mine and just to fit the light on my partners.  I also had to remove material from the inside of the X300 plastic rail attachment to fit the rail on my pistol.  Too tight to fit without mod.

Factory mags are good.

The 2011 is an excellent pistol, don't regret the purchase one bit.

Thanks, currently I'm using a full-rail S-A Loaded Operator... so I think I've got the full rail thing covered. However I do use a Surefire X300 also, and my duty holster is Safariland ALS for the railed 1911 with that light. So I'd have to guarantee I could make that light work on it.

Nice.  Shit, what holsters are you using and do you have pictures?  Nice thing about full rail guns, the holsters will work for the half rail guns too.

The light will work it just may take some mod to the plastic rail interface to fit and it may take some mod to the trigger guard.  Mine took no mod to the trigger guard until I tried to fit the light with DG switch, it was then that I had to file the checkering off the trigger guard and install the universal lock bar on the X300 to fit.  Locks up tight no problem.

Terminal ballistics of the .40 are superior to the 9mm as mentioned in other posts.  I'm sure most of us have seen the studies.  I just don't shoot one as well as I shoot a 9mm.  If I had to pick a round for top performance, it would be .40.  If I had to pick a round to carry it would be a 9mm because I shoot it soooo much better than the .40.  The ballistics of the 9mm are not awful with the right rounds and when you put 2 9mm rounds in the same space as 1 .40 round in about the same amount of time, the result is very effective.

Also, I recently had the misfortune to witness first hand the efficacy of the 9mm.  It will do the trick.
