Hey all,

Picked this up the other day, no idea what it is. My initial thought is it's something dropped from a plane to mark, or to pass information. Any of you history buffs able to shed some light?

Where I'm pointing is a lead (I'm guessing) bar

You're pretty much right.  The bag would hold messages dropped by liason/command and control/artillery spotter planes to pass info to people on the ground where radio comms may not be present.

I don't suppose you know the technical name of it do you? I didn't have much luck googling it.

Contact the Company of Military Historians or a US Army Museum.

You might try to find a copy of TM 1-245, Air-Ground Communication, 2 Dec 1941.

I do not see any text for this on the internet, but it might have the data you seek.
