From accounts I have read, I cannot imagine how utterly miserable it would have been in a WW1-era tank.

The BBC Soldiers series based on John Keegan's work had a tank episode that showed a working one.  Fumes inside, no suspension, ugh.

The armor in them would spall terribly when hit by rifle or MG rounds.  This was an attempt at protecting them from the fragments:
