Im new to buying online and was wondering if the background process if started after the shipper swaps info with my FFL or does it not atart until after it arrives to the place I have it shipped to?

<----FFL
Your dealer cannot do the background check until after you complete the Form 4473.
Basically, do I have to wait an additional 5 days after shipping or was the background pricess already started? Thanks

The Federal five day waiting period disappeared in 1986. You should contact a dealer in your state to see when the wait period begins (if your state even has one, most do not).

Until the FFL has the firearm in question in hand and logs it into his book I wouldn't think he has any possible way to start the process . I would believe you would need to also be there in person as you have to personally do the paperwork.

Correct
In reality one doesn't buy a firearm on line .

You might pay for it and shipping but ownership goes from the seller to the FFL .....

100% wrong.
The buyer has ownership, the FFL has possession. All that is being transferred is the possession of the firearm.
Not even sure who owns it while it is in transfer to the FFL as he wouldn't own it until it goes into his book and I don't think that would happen untill he has it in his hand

Buyer owns it the minute he pays for it.
The FFL never has an ownership interest in the firearm.

Seems like a risky process when you put it that way.

He's wrong and it's not any riskier than any other online purchase.
What happens if the firearms is lost in shipping or something? Does the buyer eat it or the original shipper?

Shipping insurance protects the seller, not the buyer. If the shipment never makes it to the destination, the seller owes you a refund. USPS/UPS/FedEx all allow shipper or recipient to file a claim for loss, damage or theft.
