As far as I know ––no, they confiscate the bill and you are SOL.

I dont belive so.

Friend of mine got $200 in fake 20s from a BANK!

Went to pay some bills, and the clerk noticed they were fake.   Police escorted my friend back to the bank to check his story,   The banks counting machine read them as true currency one way, and fake the other way.

He did get his money after a lot of hassle.

Nope.  I just helped put someone in jail for passing fake $100's.  The guy tried to give it to the store next door to me but she didn't have enough change.  So she brought it to me and I gave her the change.  Since it was my neighbor I didn't think to check the bill until later.  Fortunately the guy came into my store with her so we had him on video.  He later tried to pass one at a local gas station and they got his tag.  With our video and the tag number he was picked up within days.

Those pens aren't always effective.  The bad bill that I got was a real $5 that had been washed and re-printed as a $100 so the pen wouldn't have caught it.  You must look for the water mark and security strip.  That is the only way to tell for sure.

Yup, my employer got hit for 3,000 last Christmas season because some associate (read: dumbass) didn't check the security strip or use our counterfeit pens.

Don't they make pens that can check to see if a bill is fake?

If I were a business that accepted $50s and $100s I'd invest in such products for my cashiers (as well as train them to look for the micro print and watermark).

It was all the rage a few years ago to bleach a 5 or a 10 and re-print it as a 50 or a 100.

What do you think happens when you write on it with that special pen?

LOOK for the hologram and water marks, for get about those pens.

Yup, happen to me once a few years back. At the deposit the Bank took it away . Feds came and to get info about who I did business with. Small bill so no big loss. Got more leary of new looking bills then. I never found out who did it to me-too many people that day paid cash.
Nowadays people mostly pay by cc

.

When my mom was alive she got $500 in singles from her credit union. She and dad went to Vegas and she was taken into custody at the casino for passing bad bills. After a call to the credit union the feds and casino goons let mom and dad go. Her credit union actually reimbursed her. But that is not the norm to get reimbursed.

If you get a counterfeit bill (or bills), and don't know who it was, you're out the money. The bank or SS will take it.

Thank you, come again.

had that happen before, SS took care of it.

That's only useful if the bills are 100% fake ... genuine currency that's been altered to appear as a different denomination will appear genuine.

Let me tell you, there are some GOOD counterfeit bills out there.

I responded to a Target before Christmas where some lady bought a Huge LCD with fake 100s.  The clerk, for some odd reason, didn't iodine the bills and the lady walked.  These things had the new watermarks, security strips, reflective ink and the paper felt exactly like real bills.  The only way to tell visually was the absence of micro printing and you needed a magnifying glass for that.

It was a real eye opener. These were no inkjet specials.

Received a fake $10.00 bill from a waitress in Reno. Tried to get change from the casino and all hell broke loose. I had $900.00 on me and they still called the cops. I talked to the cops and told them where I got it. They went to the restaurant and checked out the waitress and she had priors for the same thing. Luckily, otherwise I may have been getting a court appearance.

Personally, I like to print a bunch of hundreds on an inkjet printer & then bring them to the feds to swap them out for real money.

Those pens work by reacting with starches in certain types of paper.  They won't detect a high-quality counterfeit.  The best way to check is to look for the little ribbon in the bill.  If somebody is good enough to put that in a counterfeit, they're good enough to beat that stupid pen.

No.  You lose $100 for not noticing the counterfeit bill.

yeah i kinda figured you would be shit out of luck.

when the new $20 dollar bills came out, my brother went to pay for gas at the gas station. he handed over the new colorful bill, the clerk said "sir, please have a seat" and called the bank to confirm if it was real or not.  like as if someone making fake money would make it all colorful
