Got this in an email...

Don't know whether you heard about this but Denzel Washington and his family visited the troops at Brook Army Medical Center , in San Antonio , Texas (BAMC) the other day. This is where soldiers who have been evacuated from Germany come to be hospitalized in the United States, especially burn victims There are some buildings there called Fisher Houses. The Fisher House is a Hotel where soldiers' families can stay, for little or no charge, while their soldier is staying on base, but as you can imagine, they are almost filled most of the time.

While Denzel Washington was visiting BAMC, they gave him a tour of one of the Fisher Houses. He asked how much one of them would cost to build. He took his check book out and wrote a check for the full amount right there on the spot. The soldiers overseas were amazed to hear this story and want to get the word out to the American public, because it warmed their hearts to hear it

The question is - why do:

Britney Spears
Madonna
Tom Cruise and
other Hollywood fluff

.... make front page news with their ridiculous antics and Denzel Washington's charity doesn't even make page 3 in the Metro section of any newspaper except the local newspaper in San Antonio.

Nothing other than "got this in my email" is original text from me in my OP. I guess it's old news.

I'm sick of this bullshit story floating around and giving credit where it isn't due.
The people of San Antonio have contributed to the Fisher House - AND MANY MORE PROJECTS FOR SOLDIERS, THEIR FAMILIES AND THE RETURNING WOUNDED.

I wouldn't mind at all if you delete dthe pictures and the story.

Might as well say danny bonaduce made the donation.....

(Fort Sam / BAMC?/Fisher House are about 1/2 a mile from my front door, and I'm a little protective of my neighbors)

According to the Snopes article:

"Denzel did not take out a checkbook and write a check on the spot," Coker says. "He seldom carries a check book with him."

Coker said Washington did in fact make a sizeable donation to Fisher House several months after his visit to BAMC. He declined to comment on the size of the donation, but it was not enough to build a new Fisher House.

[Coker also] said the fact that Washington, 49, did not write a check 'on the spot' does not diminish his contribution to the Fisher House and his support 'for the men and women who serve our country.'
Evidently the confusion came about when the commander of the Brooke Army Medical Center simultaneously announced plans for a new Fisher House facility (costing about $1.5 million) near BAMC and the news of Mr. Washington's donation. People quite naturally associated the two news items with each other and mistakenly assumed Mr. Washington had donated the full amount required to build the new facility.

So, it's true enough, even though it happened in 2004.

Denzel seems like an okay guy for a Hollywood type. He just does his movies and stays out of the public eye.

When 'I got this in an email' is part of the story, its generally a good idea to check the story out before posting.
Generally emails are:
False
Blown way out of proportion
Old
Or any combination of the above.
