I found it to be accurate enough, and it did cycle a 20" rifle, but the max charge is a compressed load, hell I think even the minimum is compressed, at the max, the velocity was only about 2700 FPS, so I wouldn't call it a defensive load.

i ran 4064 in my 223 at 22 gr but i was also using mag primers

I'd seen that the max was compressed, but I didn't know the min was there as well or close to it. Thanks for the info. I was trying to use the IMR4064 since it would simplify things. I'm leaning towards the H322, H355 or Varget. Which would you guys suggest for the most comeplete powder burn in a 16" barrel with 55gr bullet, since I've got some Hornadys coming in the mail.

Supposedly the original powder before they switched to Win 748 ball powder and screwed up the functioning in VN was 3031. I have great preformance with 24 grs of 3031 and 55gr fmj bt. Not sure about the heavier bullets. I've never had this combo malfunction in any of my ARs.
I would think 4064 would be too slow for an AR. 3031 is a faster powder and it is a compressed load. 4064 is slow enough for heavier bullets in a .30-06. edited my brain fart. Also I only have 16" bbl ARs. |

4064 works fine in a .223, in fact it was a popular powder for a lot of match shooters when I used to do that sort of thing (tho I think Varget is its equal and easier to load).

Works nicely in .223 & 22-250. Meters quite well & burns clean. |

I find it difficult to meter a charge of 4064 in 556 cases, I perfer a flake or ball powder for the AR

Alliant Reloader 15 or Hogdon H4895. More HP shooters use the RL15 than any other powder.

4064's long grains are tough to load in the .223 IMHO. It requires a bit of a drop tube for me,and can be more prone to bridging and other irritations resulting from cramming long grain powder into a tiny case.
I prefer shorter grained extruded powders like 4895 or Varget for accuracy loads. For general shooting,ball powder works fine and meters very easily. |

IMR4064 is a bit too slow for .223 IMO. I use it mostly, along with IMR4895 in all of my medium-sized rifle rounds-> .308, 6.5 Swede, 7.5 Swiss, 8mm Mauser, .30-06, .303 Brit. A near max load of 4064 in 8mm Mauser has quite a bit of punch.
Some AA2230, H335, Varget, Re-15, or even IMR4895 would be a more appropriate powder. |

Thanks for the help. I need to figure which powder to go with now. I'm not worried about metering as I use the rcbs chargemaster 1500 set-up, but I think I want a powder that is different in appearance to the 4064. I have used BLC-2 in my M1a, but then again we're talking different animals. I think I will try the varget or the H335. I will also use this powder for heavier loads up to 77 grains, at least to test their performance, but I will probably end up loading something in the 69 grain weight next go-round, as I think it may work better with the 1/9 twist barrel, but as we all know, nothing is set in stone as to what a barrel likes.

When I ran out, I used up some 3031 that same person had given me. Worked well too. Also H4895. Just bought a can of H335, gonna try that too. |

I use Varget for every thing from .223 to 30-06.
