It seems like we have an awful lot of mods running around these days. The new mods don't appear to be anywhere near as productive in their moderating as the veterans. Threads get locked for no apparent reason, new mods have thinner skin than the vets (and no sense of freakin' humor), and people get threatened with banishment far more frequently. We also have mods who appear to take out there personal problems with certain posters at every oppurtunity (ahem, ARLady). Other mods have so few posts to their own credit that we can't really determine for ourselves how mature and unbiased these individuals really are (Slasher). These problems need to be addressed by all of us, because the mods are suppoed to keep everything warm and fuzzy, not piss everybody off. "Do what you will, but enough with the asinine thread locking."

Personally, I'm really disappointed with the behavior of the moderators on this board. In fact, the problem seems to be that we have too many and they lack the experience and maturity to moderate. On AR15.com, moderator status is not awarded to those who have the common sense to moderate, but rather as a little reward to people who neither have the skills or experience to perform the job. I've seen them regularly censor line by line, word by word, and many times it's not "hate speech" or pornography, but merely topics they disagree with. So instead of engaging in intelligent discussion, they show their disapproval by locking or censoring. In my recent post www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?id=56507 I intentionally put in that little blurb at the end as a troll to see what would happen, and sure enough, Sweep took the bait, hook, line, and sinker. I had a feeling that any criticism of the moderators would cause an quick reprisal. And I was right. So Goatboy - why don't you reign in these "slash & burn" moderators and appoint those who are actually capable of moderating in an even handed manner, instead to the iron fisted bunch you have in place now.

I can't speak for other mods, but I do NOT do that. that would most certainly be abuse of power, and you are right to dislike that.

When you post here, you agree to the forum conduct code. Check #6 under there: --- (added by goatboy - 07/07/2001) 6) Pure trolling. Either to piss someone off or simply for your personal enjoyment. I have yet to see any iron fisted tactics. But you might want to check the Forum conduct code, specifically #7: bashing of mods will not be tolerated. If you have a grievance, please feel free to contact the offending mod.

Fully agree with the initial premise of this thread. My 2 cents and I discussed this in brief fashion last night with Goatboy over on AK-47.net.

Smeghead, his age has nothing to do with this. So far his only fault that I have with him is his defense of other Mods, only on the basis of their status as Mods. I have been personally insulted in the chat room by mods but have not taken it personally. But when the shoe is on the other foot it seems we do not get the benefit of the doubt.

I don't think age really has anyhting to do with it. I want to know who is going to be a mod though, so post count definetly matters. We just have too many mods on this board who don't do much to add to the quality of life here on the GD board. 2-3 mods is all we really need. Frankly I think we also should have some input into who becomes a mod because it looks more like a popularity contest than anything else to me. There should be votes for mods, not appointments, especially since their behavior directly affects us. If we were able to vote for our mods we would have a lot less to bitch about because they would be our problem. "Do what you will, but enough of the clique shit."

got a little something caught in your throat there? not exactly sure what you're referring to as my "personal problems". if you mean my little go 'round with blondie, you're way off base. i was just having a little fun feeding the trolls. it's been such a long time since i've done that. just for old time's sake, ya know... i have only 2 issues with her. the first being that i have very little respect for women who have to flaunt their sexuality because they have nothing else to bring to the table. and i was really getting irked at her behavior and attitude towards gun ownership: ignorant (with no real intent on changing it) and apparent irresponsibility. i have no personal problems with her. hell, i don't even know her. and i don't really have any other personal problems to speak of that seem to be pervading my life such that i am always bringing them to this board and spreading them around for all to share. if you'd be so kind as to back up your statement with some evidence of some sort, i'll be glad to eat my words. otherwise, zip it. and finally, this is not your house. if you don't like the rules, you are free to visit someone else's house. however, if you choose to stay here, you will abide by the rules or suffer the consequences.

Love to but as the other mod stated,"mods can change the rules as they see fit", so kinda hard to obey rules that haven't been made up yet.

So, you are disappointed because when you challenge authority in a disrespectful, confrontational, insulting manner, that very same authority is exercised? I bet that you get disappointed quite a bit. That post was a good one, funny, until that last line, which shot the humor all to hell.

Yes, we can change the rules, but it happens rarely. And of course GB has the final say in anything that we change. But I would think that any rule change would be made know way before it was enforced. At least that's the way I'm handling my rule change.

Way to many Moderators---hell we have over 7 in GD alone. Age is important because it denotes maturity, those that think otherwise are still kids themselves. I have always been very supportive of the mods before, but lately things have really got out of hand. Sure do miss Ed Sr. sgtar15

Your entire above statement sums it up and provides all the "proof" I need. I treat you with respect (but question your responsibility as a mod, which is allowed) and you return it with pendantic bullshit. So do us a favor, zip it. "Do what you will, just grow up before arguing with an adult."

Uhh, no. It is legal to purchase rifles at teh age of 18, handguns at the age of 21. You are the one who is ignorant. Please check the law if you don't believe me. Edited to add: If any of you don't believe I own an AR15, ask Grin or Anti. They can verify that I did indeed purchase an LEGP.

WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE? HAS THE SERVER AND MODS SUDDENLY MOVED TO AFGHANISTAN? WHAT'S UP WITH THE LOCKING AND UNLOCKING. MAKES IT SEEM LIKE YOU DON'T HAVE A CLUE. WHAT IS THE PUNISHMENT OR CONSEQUENCES AGAIN FOR SPEAKING OUR MINDS? L OF 86, I don't give a flying fart how old you are or what the age to own one is. You're not of enough mental maturity to handle the responsibility of owning a firearm or preaching to those who do.

Alright everybody, stop throwing insults at the mods our anybody else. This thread has a legitimate purpose and I don't want it to be lost because some people feel the need to have a temper tantrum on my thread. **(MODS)**As somebody stated before, speak up when you are going to do something. It really pissed me off to have my thread locked with no explanation. I think whoever did it needs to get off the board for a while and cool off. hell kiddo who cares if you got an LEGP? im sure youre proud of that accomplishment. the other guys were goofing on you about your maturity to handle the responsibility of gun ownership (and being a moderator in a roomfull of adults; some of whom have been to actual SHTF situations). time is the only true teacher, old age and wisdom are the lessons learned.

The federal law is 18 long, 21 hand... my state law is 18 both (so non-FFL sales can be to 18), but then the 18-19-20 YO can't buy ammo for his handgun. My father bought me my first handgun when I was 18 when I got home from boot camp, but then after MOS school I went to the rock for a year, and loved the far east so much I stayed an extra year (I was one of the crazies who even liked korea, and of course thailand rocked)...by the time I was at a stateside base I could have bought one the FFL way anyway ;-)

I personally think these type of threads are very healthy; they make us think about moderating and let members air gripes. I started one about two years ago right before I became a mod- it was a doozy. With that said, I think the subjective nature of voluntary moderating will always be rife with calls that don't sit well with ppl. However, the alternative is unacceptable. Rigid moderating based on detailed rules of procedure would stifle, not expand, the discussions on this board. I will tell you this, we talk a lot in the mod forum, on the phone, and via email about decisions we make. We're not rogue mods, we work as a team. Unfortunately, we will never please everyone. So far as ArLady, she was not moderating in the BB thread and so I think the comments made about her are irrelevant and misplaced in this thread. When we are not moderating, we're just members. If you have a problem, email a mod with whom the problem exists; we will listen and try and respond reasonably.
