A national protest strike is supposed to take place after morning prayer on Friday. The Pakistani government is bracing for the protest and has mobilized thousands of military and police personel to keep things under control.

If the government can keep things calm, we can count on the Pakistanis to continue support of US anti-terrorist operations in Pakistan. If there are severe clashes..... Pakistan may erupt into civil war.

The Jamaat-e-Uslami are a large pro-Taliban  political party in Pakistan. They also support terrorists in Kashmir (or at least that's what some people say).

ArmdLbrl, the BBC report was from today's protests. Not much going on there. A few American flags and effigies burnt in protest. Not much violence.

Tomorrow (Friday) MAY be different!

I heard that there have only been two deaths during the "national strike". If this is true, it appears the Pakistani government has been able to control the situation and will be able to give the US the support promised for operations against the Taliban.

PS - It also appears the US will lift economic sanctions imposed against Pakistan and India for "nuclear weapons" testing.  I'm not sure I feel comfortable with that decision.

Sounds like the demonstrations were a bit more violent that first reported.

They will continue Saturday too. And India is having the same demos in Kashmir.

Reported on the news that we are moving troops in to secure their nuclear stockpile.  Sure hope it's true.  Looks like the average guy in the street hates our guts.
