dont they send in the serial number and gun model when they do the check or is that just the "piss yellow" form

The only info they phone into NICS is your name, state, and long-gun/handgun. i.e. "John Doe, Idaho Handgun". They then check to see if that particular name has any prohibitive conditions and then approve or delay or deny the sale. The serial number goes on the yellow form but stays with the dealer.
