I feel like I should go out on our property to look now.  I specifically remember a ton of chestnuts when I was a kid.

We had selective logging done the other year.  They took some expensive rare stuff, hopefully there were no chestnuts.

Too bad I can't even identify poison

Would definitely be interested in buying some nuts if OP goes that route.

My FIL use to have two huge American Chestnut trees in his back yard and kept me in ample supply. They died a few years ago and I’ve been beholden to buying them. Would love to get a few started in my back yard.

What is this liquid your friend was drinking?

@MaxxII

Oral Ivy

Thank you for that. I have ordered some.

Back to American Chestnut trees…
Unfortunately, like another poster, I live on a clay hill outside their native range.

Hopefully the seeds you guys are passing around will grow into large healthy trees in time.

Same.  What I did is kept them in the fridge as is recommended.  When I planted them, the soil is supposed to be acidic (according to the website).  If you go back a few pages I asked this specific question and got some good answers.  I ended up putting mine in Maricle Grow.  It looks like it evens out to all of what I have researched.  Mine will stay in pots for a few years.  If they grow.

Now they are just beginning to daylight.

Let the soil dry between waterings.

Merica’ Chestnut.

Yeah man, I'm really happy it's getting some traction here.

Keep in mind the Pine Tree Flag was legit over Brits stealing our best trees for shipbuilding.

The American Chesnut is something that was awesome for everyone, especially Appalachia. Good food for animals, good wood for construction, good wood for burning, and beautiful trees. It's a fantastic tree. The only one that's even on my radar for cool tree would be the Aspen. It's basically one network of trees which is so fucking cool

An old Forester told me "trees don't just grow where its ideal they grow anywhere they can get away with it."

Its worth a try, I've seen trees all over where they officially weren't supposed to be able to grow.

@PKT1106

Im sending leaves off for official ID in the next few days. Based on the pics posted and two plant ID apps it is likely my tree is a real surviving American chestnut, and my in-laws younger (but still big) two are European chestnuts.

Any seeds / nuts would be in the fall and likely American / European hybrids. That being said, I probably will do a thread in the fall and just make it clear that trees grown from those nuts are likely hybrids.

I'm 100% behind the American Chestnut and don't want to be a damper on the enthusiasm here, but no one should be wasting their time on seeds that come from OP's tree. They will not be pure American Chestnut and fertile, period. They will be sterile or a hybrid with the other tree there. It may be possible to collect the pollen this year, bag some flowers next year so they don't get crossed, then paint the pollen on in the bag.

"Can american chestnut self pollinate
The American chestnut tree is monoecious, meaning it has both male and female flowers on the same tree. However, it is not capable of self-pollination. According to the search results, the tree's flowers are protogynous, meaning the stigma is receptive to pollination before the pollen is shed from the anther of the same flower or tree. This requires cross-pollination, which is typically facilitated by wind or insects.

AI-generated answer."

I have to call BS on that map. -25°F is not a "normal" low in central Illinois. That would be a record breaking temperature. I am in northern IL and we were in the -20°F - 22°F range several years ago and records were set. I was up in Eagle River, WI probably 15 years ago or so and it was -23°F and if records weren't being set it was really close. The good news, the snowmobiles fired up just fine that morning.

That's based off of a lowest temp over 20 or 30 years if I'm not mistaken? I remember when it was -15 here some years ago. I'm pretty far south, but I think the all time record low for my area might be -20 or lower.

It says lowest average annual temperature. I  interpret it as they take the lowest temperature of the year and then average those.

I have to call BS on that map. -25 F is not a "normal" low in central Illinois. That would be a record breaking temperature. I am in northern IL and we were in the -20 F - 22 F range several years ago and records were set. I was up in Eagle River, WI probably 15 years ago or so and it was -23 F and if records weren't being set it was really close.

Yes - the term gets used different ways but for this it is the average of the lowest temperatures per year. And, that map kind of does suck. Here's a better one:

[Last Edit: deerranger] [#50]
I spent every evening for most of the last week watering my new 1 year old chestnut seedlings, it takes about 2 hours to get all 75 of them watered. I can't water them through the irrigation system because it would feed too much out to the other 620 trees in the chestnut orchard. New seedlings need alot of attention, I can't imagine planting some out this late in the year, they will have a hard time getting the roots established before the heat of the summer but it is doable. Now I am fighting a infestation of winter moth caterpillars eating away my leaves. It's all fun and games untill it is not.Attachment Attached File
