Wow. I got caught flat-footed on cameras 'cause they're locked up in my safe, but watching it in person was spectacular.
The sky is a little hazy, humidity at the ground is high so not optimal for photography. Sour grapes. I saw a lot of stage 2 burning, and stage 1's re-entry burn plus a few pulses of guidance thrusters. |

It looked like the second stage was is sunlight until around T+00:08:00. They went to the landing so it could have been a little bit longer.
Waiting for jellyfish photos or videos. I just watched the video from the car. Muted the noise. Hopefully someone gets that from a beach. |

There could be another on 5 April with launch at 7:25 PM PDT. Would it be better and less confusing to start a new thread or just update the title and new information on this page?
|
|
|
I got a Ring camera video with the voice of my wife talking to our cat (through the camera), who was watching me watch the launch. I don't know if I'll be able to edit it down to anything presentable, but it's pretty funny and you can see the re-entry burn for several seconds.
The burn looks much brighter on the Ring video than it did to my eyes. Ring works mostly in infrared in low light. |

My personal preference would be to keep everything in the SpaceX thread. I'm kicking myself very lightly for messing up on this one. I probably could have gotten a few good stills if I had been mindful of this launch. |

I'm ready. The sky looks pretty good in San Diego.
Nothing can stop me now, other than a scrub. |

I have Canon T2i body with an EF 24-105 lens for motion, and a 5D Mark III with my 300 f/4 fixed for stills. I will not be skunked again, other than by forces beyond my control. |

Edit Falcon 9 is what we saw. The previous one got pushed into a cloudy night so no luck. |

I got video and some stills last night, probably nothing presentable. You can see MECO and the second stage starting up, although at minimal zoom on a 24-105 lens. I fat-fingered my lens out of focus when I went to full zoom. The focus ring is really loose, and I should have taped it in place at infinity and maybe stopped it down a bit. I caught the fairings, blurry. Most unfortunate because the second stage jellyfish passed right over Jupiter from my POV.
I think I'd be better off using a 70-300 for video next time. I used a 300 prime on a full-frame body for stills. A few might be salvageable, but I had focus problems and there was a pretty bad smudge of organic matter on the skylight filter. I got a couple of stills of the re-entry burn that would have been good with a clean lens and in focus. I also should have stopped it down a bit. I should concentrate on video next time, and try to have a competent spare human to do stills. Oh, and use the full-frame body for video. |
