Basic was actually not bad. Getting to your unit sucks. Enjoy it while you can. I have a few regrets but joining was not one of them. Benning is a cool post. I did mine at Knox in the winter of 07. Like others have said post your address for all the goodies =)

Good luck to you, OP. Whether you do 20 minutes or 20 years, you've chosen to do what a whole lot of people are not nowadays (including kids of those who have served).
I've served with LOTS of good people. Guys who started as privates and ended up as generals. Some not-so-good (indeed, in real military incarceration, or who I wouldn't piss on if their guts were on fire). Lost Soldiers in my arms. Had to hand over a folded flag and say, "I'm sorry I lost your husband." 85% of a career doing routine and sometimes dull, stupid, and boring. 15% doing what people could never dream of or believe, sometimes in sheer terror or giggling and laughing at the opportunity (and being paid to do it). I'll leave you this for a little inspiration (not a recruiter, but supported all 43 brigades). Symbol of Strength More than a Uniform I Became A Soldier • United States Army Recruiting Video |

I went through Infantry OSUT thirty five years ago. Damn I'm old.
Benning will always be Benning. 30th AG will suck balls. Red phase of BCT will suck balls. Stay motivated. Be a number and not a name. You will do some cool stuff. Not like when you get to your permanent unit but fun stuff none the less. If you give us your unit address and graduation date, maybe we can scrap up some of us former 11Bs for a road trip to see you graduate. I would be honored to pin my blue cord on your shoulder. That's usually reserved for family members passing down from fathers to sons or uncles to nephews. I do not have anyone in my family going Infantry so it's yours if you want it. Ft Benning B-9-2 Harmony Church summer of 81. Our reception station was at Ft Jackson then we caught a bus to Benning. OSUT was only like 12 weeks back then. Hard to believe it’s almost 43 years since I met my drill Sargent Gosa and Hendricks

The Infantryman's Creed I am the Infantry. I am my country's strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight wherever, whenever. I carry America's faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country's trust. Always I fight on through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME! |

OP - It’s going to be OK. Nobody at basic (including the drill sergeants) will care if you have zits or are red faced. Do your best and don’t quit on anything! The rest of it will all work out. Keep us posted and good luck! |

Memorize this and the rank structure before going. One less thing to fuck up. There was some other creed too, but I don’t remember. And the army song. |

I guess I should have said when I was a Drill Sgt at Benning. I was at Harmony Church. I was there in the early 1980's when we didn't have a reception station. We would go to Ft Jackson, SC and get troops. I never did, but some guys would go a day early and take a look at the livestock, er trainees. They would tell the obese ones that they better be on sick call in the morning. I never did that. I never went to Ft Jackson to pick up new troops period. I remember two things from my days on the trail, which I was drafted into as were 90% of the Drill Sgts, and that is we gave the troops a questionaire to fill out the first night. There was a question: Why did you join the Army? 99.5% answered because they wanted to be all they could be! The other thing is most gained about 25 pounds. We trained them troops. I always told them I was just like them and that we would meet again and serve together. Like I said in my other post, the training is tough but not anything you can't handle. We need strong, well trained troops to defend our nation and our way of liife.
That is a true statement above my post. I never regretted anything I have done. I only regret what I held back from trying. |

I did Infantry OSUT at Benning in 2003. I remember the recruiter gave me a pretty good idea of what to bring and what not to bring.

Observations while family went through.
Red phase is weeks 1-22. Buy decent boots when you’re afforded the opportunity as issue boots are crap. Try Kim’s Boot and Shoe, they have a decent selection. Don’t be a trash human, listen, obey, don’t be an idiot, don’t go to sick call (unless you die), don’t go on profile. |

I kept that up for a year, looked good for 6 months but then leg it all go. I still have the remnants of that, barely. |
