These are a very good value. I keep several in the console as a backup to the pentels.

I can't imagine his chonker of a pencil would be a good for someone that uses a pencil as a writing instrument all day. It seems to be more appropriate for layout work in the wood shop.

I used Berol wooden, silver "Blueprint" pencils for layout work on steel when I did welding fabrication.  They were the midpoint in precision between a soapstone and a scribe on Dychem.

I've used all of those.  I used mainly Staedtler Mars and Eberhard Faber lead holders for drafting.  Most of my mechanical pencils were Pentel but I like pilot as well.

Because of security: I could not find a place to take picture where my super model wife, perfect kids, exotic cars, private jets and yacht were not in the background. I try to stay private.

Skilcraft American Classic.

"Created with pride by Americans who are Blind".  Literally says it on the box.  If a blind person can appreciate a writing instrument, then who am I to argue.  I use them everyday and they are awesome.

the ohto super pro mecha 1503s is better.
https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/ohto-super-promecha-pm-1503s-3-mm-102370875

you can adjust how much lead progresses by a twist knob. the old one that i have, which seems discontinued also has a sleeve adjuster. there's a dial near the tip that adjusts how much of the lead sleeve protrudes. if you have slots from measuring devices, you can extend it to make marks, but retract it to make it more centered to your hand when writing normally.

the reason i like the sleeve adjuster is that small leads eventually can't be held. at 1 cm the lead isn't long enough to make it from the clamp to the end of the pencil, and most people simply throw it away and change to a new one. however, by moving the lead sleeve to almost adjacent the clamp, i can feed the next lead behind my current piece of lead. i'll know i'm on my last cm because the lead no longer rotates with the pencil. normally, pencil lead will rotate with the clamp. this way, only until the last 1mm is lost as it explodes spectacularly on to my paper, when the sleeve is holding too little and the force of paper torques the last 1mm out.

The Pentel Sharp is the best mechanical pencil of all time.

That said, I've become more of a technical pencil guy over the last decade.  But options for those are way more limited.

Nope.  Have had this one since high school.  It’s gone through Engineering school, MBA school, three different employers, been in two Space Shuttles, who knows how many other aircraft, and all continents but Africa and Antarctica.

I present you a 1993-ish model, Pentel P205.

I totally need to get back to some Atchafalaya country then!

FWIW, I'm running this one now.  Not nearly as good as the pilot and the shirt-clip isn't right, but it's the closest you can readily get today.  It's not bad

You are correct. My blue is a .7mm

That picture is from the Walmart website. I have no idea why it's a blue .5mm.

I use the pentel champ throwaways so I don't have to get upset when i break or lose one.

My grandfather was a draftsman back in the 50's through the 80's. I have his pencils and sharpener, they didn't use those tiny leads, it was a stout 3/32ish sized graphite and it used a special sharpener to get it to a needle point.

I was going to ask this question.  I've been snapping off lead like crazy.

What's a .5mm mechanical pencil with a useful eraser that has a cushion tip?

I've been using the plastic Papermate Clearpoint pencils but they don't last.  I get a few months out of them before they crap out.  They do have cusion tips and a big fat eraser that lasts a long time.

2mm lead holder, also called a technical pencil, clutch pencil.  The sharpener is called a "lead pointer".

I love them.  They used to use them a lot because those pointers could get that lead super sharp with hard leads on pointer's grinders and not have to shave wood.  Good stuff.
