I just received an e-mail, with no subject line, and no sender. Atteched was an exe file, called something like lljll.exe. I immediately deleted the mail without opening the file, and then purged the mail from my "deleted mail" file.

Since I've never had a virus, and know shit about them, does anyone know what this might have been, and am I safe now?

I've been told to do what you did should the "exe." show up with no title, etc.

You are fine. I haven't seen that virus before, but if you don't open the damn attachments, you are in no danger. Good thinking.

If you want a long drawn out explanation as to why you are safe, ask and i will explain.

You should be O.K., most e-mail viruses have a .vbs extension. But you should always have the latest anti-virus software just to be safe. Some of these .vbs viruses disguise themselves as normal .vbs outlook executables and you don't have to even open your mail for the virus to do it's dirty work. MacAfee and Norton anti-virus programs can stop these .vbs programs before they can wipe out your mail, send itself to all your friends and infect/destroy large parts of your hard drive.

I suggest that you don't do what that email tells you to, as it is NOT a virus. SULFNBK.EXE is a windows system file and deleting it will result in your system not being able to recognize long file names (over 8 characters).

Computer malware (viruses, worms, trojans) exist in .EXE, .COM, .VBS, SHS, Word documents, Excel, Powerpoints, and many other venues.  The most recent major ones do happen to use .VBS and .SHS, but that does not diminish the importance of being careful with all files that you receive via e-mail, floppy, or other methods.

don't delete sulfnbk.exe it's a windows system file.

critter, you did the right thing.

most people get nailed because they open every attachment without looking to see what it is, or without scanning it for virii first. always keep your virus definitions up-to-date for your scanner software, and make sure you disable macros and javascript in outlook and word. word macro virii seem to be what are causing most problems these days.
