Sitting in a plywood box with 2 1lb propane canisters and a tiny shitty heater. Trees were popping like gunshots. I was a little scared because it was a 30 minute ride on a quad (the guides drop you off and pick you up) from the nearest dirt road and another 30 minute drive in the truck after that to any type of civilization. Each morning when the sound of the quad went away was as alone as I've ever felt. Froze my ass off even wearing Northern Outfitters warmest system. Never. Again. |

Gonna make a weather call in the morning. Not going out at night with these temps to mitigate some risk. If it’s -20 or warmer tomorrow I think we’ll end up going.
Yeah yeah Rosta you’re a pussy my grandad walked to school in -120 barefoot both ways. And I’d gladly go at any temp. But bringing my kids makes me be more cautious. |

Was -35f and blizzarding.. Made damn sure my kids had multiple sleeping bags to cover them in the sled. Was a bit cool for them. |

We used to take our kids(s young as 4&6 yrs old) to camp, roughly 40 miles on sleds...ended up getting them the best gear we could buy, putting hand warmers in boots and gloves, duct taping both bibs to boots and jackets to gloves, then using electric shields on the full face helmets so they could see, just had the older one hang onto my mountain bar and my wife used a kids harness to strap our daughter in front of her so the daughter went with the wife when ever she fell off the sled(don't ask), anyway, worked good even in -40 weather, kids always toasty warm and comfortable and the electric shields kept the vision nice and clear....Of course when they got older they got their own sleds for x-mas when they were 10 and 12 years old...That really put them on top of the world...

Any concern with ice build up taking the stove pipe? Do you have enough property to supply wood, are you going to have to haul in by truck in the summers, or can you cut locally on public land? I've got a cabin in the middle of nowhere but not near as remote as yours. Looks like an excellent place for solitude.

When I see sustained temps like that I have to wonder, are you and your wife born and raised in AK? If not, how'd you come about ending up there? If that's too personal feel free to ignore it.
