At least my hometown no longer has the most expensive stadium. I now know how Steve Harvey feels. Voters chose to build it. These districts are wealthy. No state income taxes. Soaring property values that are doing much better than the stock market. When Allen Texas built one for about six million Forbes magazine said it was a brilliant move to essentially brand the top and attack wealthy families. They can't build 750,000 $ homes fast enough and high paying industries are relocating there. There are 6000 high school students in Allen. Recently labeled the sixth best district in the country. Part of the issue is how Texas does school financing. IIRC, we are still using a version of the Robin Hood law. School districts that have more operating funds are forced to remit some of their tax revenue to poorer school distriicts. The kicker is that payments for capital improvements come off the top-not part of operating funds. Wealthy districts would rather burn their excess tax revenue on unnecessary capital project than just send the money back to the state. I live in a small district that was not poor. Every district like us has been poring money into capital projects.

None of these stadiums actually make money. To generate sufficient cash flow to pay the operating costs, maint. costs, and to pay off the construction, you would have to book major acts and sell out the stadium 4 nights a week almost every week of the year. And, since you can't sell the high mark up items like beer, the ticket prices would have to be real steep for these acts.
Student tickets are low revenue/discounted seats. And, that's the bulk of the people on Friday night. Even the concession revenues are typically given, in part, to the booster groups that provide volunteer workers for the concession stands. Now, the stadiums do spin off some income to neighboring businesses. Sure. But, that's using everybody's money to build a facility that generates income for a select few like the local pizza and burger joints. Good for the local Chamber of Commerce. Not exactly a good deal for the tax payers. |

here's how this shit happens. The school board and district hold a referendum vote on this. But yet you only describe th schools as D-1 which is a sports ranking not an academic ranking. Personally I'm more proud that my school is a top ten school academically than a D-1 school. It's also nice that when you see alumni from my school on TV they're trying to explain cutting-edge research/ treatments in a way the general public can understand instead of "It was a good game. I'd really don't see anything wrong with high property taxes as long as the residents get what they want. View Quote My little burg built a very modest stadium seven years ago. It cost 10 million for a turf field, 500 seats on the home side and 250 on the visitors plus a concession stand and restrooms. The citizens voted down a 12 million dollar bond two years before because of the cost. The only difference between the two bonds was a second concession stand plus they took money for a new band hall in the bond that passed. |

Football should have exactly $0.00 spent on it from taxpayer dollars. Fund the program through ticket sales and fundraising, or better yet don't have a program at all. Spend the money on education, because that's what it was stolen at gunpoint for.
