What do people mean when they say a vehicle is "built"? I thought any vehicle that exists on earth had to be built by someone but apparently some vehicles are more built than others.
I would take to mean its been highly customized to be tough as shit.
I've seen it used by Jeep guys, some of whom basically rip everything factory they can off and put their own stuff on.

Bro'd the fuck out.
Otherwise they'd specify what kind of build (overland, LT desert, crawler, etc). |
Normally as in "built not bought". Meaning the owner has done the majority of the custom fabrication. Not mall crawler bolt on crap.
Usually means "I'm trying to get what I paid for all the parts brand new and recoup everything."
Usually |
It's the vehicular equivalent of the "custom" tapcofucked AR frankenbuilds you see for sale for $1500 on armslist and other gun exchanges.
It's just like the guys here who say they "built" their rifle as opposed to have simply bought the parts and assembled it.
Of someone uses the word built it means they don't know fuckall and bolted a winch on it.
I think the term is used this way:
Wow, that dude is really "built." |
The " Built " slang, IMO equates to supremely functional, capable and with a list of parts that had reputation to live under application of force and abuse.
To others it's a Bro truck. Mileage varies in its subjectivity. |
Unless proven otherwise "built" means cheap parts made by sketchy foreign companies installed by questionable mechanics (if a mechanic was involved at all) and touted as the best thing since sex and sold at a premium price. Usually done after they broke it the first time doing some stupid shit that it wasnt made to do to begin with.
Brake boosted 4wd launch in deisel trucks come to mind. |
its like the word "custom"
it means they added a bunch of shit to it that reduced the value but now they want to sell it for 2x its worth. |
Critical parts are irreparably altered, usually with welds of grotesque appearance and questionable strength. Other parts are replaced at random with inferior quality components, usually purchased online from a certain auction site. The exterior is then covered with all the stickers that came with the inferior replacement parts, plus whatever other stickers the builder could find around the garage. Finally, the resulting abomination is posted for sale at a 8.7 times the original vehicle and parts MSRP.
Overall, its the offroad equivalent of Bubba's rifle. |

Built, as in "built up". Many aftermarket parts are manufactured to be stronger than factory. The only genuine "built" 4X4s are built for offroading. as opposed to mall crawling. You really do need to know what stuff does, doesn't do, how it's made and what it's made from or you get taken to the cleaners.
Very rarely does someone "build" a Jeep and then sell it for more than what they have into it. |

What you're talking about is totally ruining a vehicle. So something like this.... http://4x4db.com/images/ford/2005_ford_f250_4x4_diesel_1914072017-10.jpg ...as opposed to this: http://4x4db.com/images/ford/1974_ford_f250_7414072017-1.jpg View Quote |

Sometimes it means highly customized, lots of custom fitting/custom made parts.
Sometimes it means built as in "I built this ar15 by putting a PSA lower on a PSA upper" |

It's a holdover from when most cars were ordered from a customer-selected list of options, rather than purchsed as-is off of a showroom floor.
It means they bought a $30,000 4x4, spent $20,000 modifying it into a $10,000 brodozer with shitty handling.

I would say the definition varies as widely as the word "custom" as that term is applied in "gunsmithing".

Back in the day, my built was a 77 Chevy stepside. 454 with a .610 solid cam, 7000 rpm, 850 Holley carb. 1970 square port heads. Needed a 1050 dominator, crank scraper, started with 11 to 1 pop up piston, went to 10 and a half. . 350 turbo trans, titanium spag, , 3800 rpm stall converter, Dana 60 with 5.38 gears. Ladder bars welded in. Them was fun days. That was built for my days.

I don't mind big trucks when they actually get used like big trucks. $80K diesel bro-dozers that never leave the pavement don't do anything for me.

If the Craigslist add only describes the vehicle in question as "built" you would do well to avoid all contact with the seller and his "built" Jeep/truck/buggy/4-wheeler.
