Artillery boggles my mind.

How those guys can rain metal down onto damn near the exact same spot, repeatedly, from different batteries at different ranges/altitudes.... even though I have a better-than-average understanding of ballistics is.... astonishing

As a former FO, when you say "artillery artistically shooting ISIS" I expect to see some goddamned amazing sheafs completely covering enemy troop positions... instead I get a gun monkey with a stache that would give a 1st Sgt a fucking aneurysm.

Thread did not deliver.

I get what you're putting down, and I agree.

I'm not impressed by laser guided bombs, gps tomahawks, etc.

These guys put stuff on target without any of that.

Very impressive.

Meh. It's about accurate to within 100-200 meters.

Oh, I get that (F/TR competitor here).
But here's part of what amazes me:

Those big 155s recoil HARD.  'Stuff' must move, at least some.
How the hell do they return to zero?

Cold bore vs successive fires.... thermal dynamics,  metallurgy, interior ballistics (which is a can of worms in and of itself), atmospherics, the fact that everything is contracted to the lowest bidder (QC), blah blah blah.... and they can STILL put them damn near exactly where they want them to go.  Every time.

Like I said, boggles the mind

Ok, so my question is how did the photographer get that first shot?

My best guess is that the howitzer fired near the very end of the camera exposure, otherwise the muzzle flash wouldn't be as sharply defined.

You guys do realize that the first picture is completely photoshopped to get what you see.

Thats not a one shot deal. The photographer took many picture elements and combined them. There is no fucking way your going to see the milky way as a muzzle flash is happening and have them both be in focus.....

While it is likely two stacked photos, the focal point of both photos is the artillery piece - the stars in the background are not in focus.
