Bizarre flashes of cosmic light may actually be generated by advanced alien civilizations, as a way to accelerate interstellar spacecraft to tremendous speeds, a new study suggests.

Astronomers have catalogued just 20 or so of these brief, superbright flashes, which are known as fast radio bursts (FRBs), since the first one was detected in 2007. FRBs seem to be coming from galaxies billions of light-years away, but what's causing them remains a mystery.

One potential artificial origin, according to the new study, might be a gigantic radio transmitter built by intelligent aliens

Why would aliens build such a structure? The most plausible explanation, according to the study team, is to blast interstellar spacecraft to incredible speeds. These craft would be equipped with light sails, which harness the momentum imparted by photons, much as regular ships' sails harness the wind.

We're actually working on a design for interstellar light sail spacecraft. Little tiny sail craft would be propelled to 20% of light speed - fast enough to get to Alpha Centauri in 20 years. That's an amazing technical feat, if we can do it.

Not sure if this is plausible. If you build a transmitter on a planet and relativistic mass approaches infinity as you approach the speed of light the planet would be blasted in the opposite direction to accelerate the ship. Newton's third law and all.

If we can see the bursts, doesn't that mean these alleged alien ships are aimed directly at us? Prepare for your new alien overlords.

A blast of energy bright enough to be seen billions of light years away is going to vaporize anything within the galaxy it came from.

We've been beaming radio waves out into space for over a hundred years, and TV for almost as long. Is it possible that somewhere out there an alien is asking if the Three Stooges are proof of intelligent life?

WOO WOO WOO!

Occam's razor says it's probably just aliens listening to the radio.

No, because the first radio broadcasts weren't until the early 1900s. Meaning that those waves have only reached about 100LY away. Barely our own galactic neighborhood has heard our earliest broadcasts; about the Wright Brothers and War of the Worlds.

Sure, why not.

People believe dumber shit.

So the aliens have a stationary EM Drive?

Naysayers.... the odds of our planet being the only one with intelligent life are so low at this point there is almost suredly civilizations that have figured it out by now. So it would not be surprising that we eventually pick up their signs. We are already proving theories for interstellar travel...we've actually already theoretically teleported matter...big things are coming and I doubt we are the first.

And since I'm in the middle of watching the new Independence Day movie again, I hope we don't attract attention...

Sailboats work because they have a rudder that bears against the medium (water).

There is (currently) no analogous method for bearing against 'space'.

So you can send stuff on solar sails away from the strongest star, but at some point you'll want to turn it off to prevent course changes and then back on again to decel.

Until we can tack on a solar sail it's not that useful.

These could be Bussard ramjets firing to stabilize a ringworld that happens to be edge-on to us.

We are being psychologically softened up by our soon to be overlords by the funny giraffe in the zoo videos.  The Puppeteers are subtle and patient.
