Yep he doesn't want to fun up in qualifying and have to borrow a car. Good thing he will get to start with sticker tires so they say now versus starting with tires you qualified on with what 10 or so laps.

Their time is better spent finding a good race trim for the car than wasting time on a qualifying trim that doesn't help them in the race.

Remember that backup car is probably last weeks race car and has a completely different setup. This is one of those weird fast but not superspeedway tracks. Setup from race to qualifying is far different. No point in them wasting time finding a qualifying trim with a new car.

IIRC, the 2 car taking that penalty and losing 35 points dropped him from 2nd to 4th. Didn't realize Chase was second in points. Top 10 was a given, I assumed top 5, but didn't expect 2nd.
