Did you get him to admit pulling the trigger? Yes sir I did. Are everyone's ears hurting? We were all surprised that none of our ears were ringing or hurting, even the dogs hardly reacted. Is he gonna pay for the tv? He offered but they were struggling to buy a G-17 at dealer cost, no way they could pay for the tv. I figure that I learned a costly lessong that could've been a whole lot more costly so I got off lucky. |

I've been in a very similar situation, except I ended up with 4 holes in me. The "4 rules" of firearms safety contribute to NDs I think. NRA rules are much better, because they have you focus on what TO DO. Always Keep a firearm pointed in a safe direction. Always keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot. Always keep a gun unloaded until ready to use. View Quote |

Yeah, unholstered guns laying around is a shitty idea.
It's on my hip, in a safe or at an absolute minimum in a holster and in a drawer. I get what you're saying about having a loaded firearm around, however if it's loaded and just sitting on the kitchen table and you're in the bathroom when some asshole breaks into the house, who gets to the gun first? At a minimum, holstered and out of sight. I'm glad you're all OK and thank you for sharing the story. It's important we all remember we're not infallible space shuttle door gunners and that an ounce of prevention goes a long way. |
|

I bet he doesn't want a Glock now that he knows they go off by themselves!

Thanks for sharing the lesson. I think the biggest point is don't fuck with guns needlessly. Even home alone laying a loaded glock on a table is stupid, shit happens, holsters prevent shit.
Next point a gun on a table is not in a safe direction! A loaded gun without anything preventing a trigger pull pointed at exterior walls is not safe. I point loaded guns goin in and out of holsters at the ground ONLY! Need to chamber a round? Point at ground, need to unload point at ground. Let your friend be a man and pay of the tv. If that ends the friendship he is an idiot and an asshole. |

Isn't Glaser a gimmick bullet? View Quote I'm glad your OK OP. This is one that could have easily ended in tragedy. The only one I let around my guns is my son and he's an MP that I gun trained myself. Your friend should maybe take an actual safety class to get this shit drilled into his head. Of all the sins "pointing at another person" is the worst. Even worse the pulling the trigger. Another reason I avoid public ranges. |

You are trying to figure out how to operate the action of the particular firearm if you are inexperienced, or experienced and with reduced mental function from being tired, old, etc. Even if you think that ensuring it's unloaded first is the best step, there is no sound argument for neglecting to keep it pointed in a safe direction. Safe direction needs to come first, foremost, and maintained always. Focus on ensuring unloaded encourages several potentially fatal mindsets. The first one is manipulating the action of the firearm as a priority, rather than muzzle awareness. The second is the logical conclusion by many that once the weapon is determined to be unloaded, it might be ok to do things that aren't ok, like point them at someone carelessly. ALWAYS keep a firearm pointed in a safe direction when handling them. ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot. In the OP's scenario, I would seriously consider ALWAYS keeping loaded firearms on your person and concealed in a setting with friends when eating, dining, or socializing. You never know what some inexperienced or impaired judgment person will do when exposed to loaded firearms. |

Id say find a donor tv and see if can make one good one from both. I would not try a screen swap, but I would find a broken one with a good screen and swap out all the electronics inside. People sell or dump broken ones for CHEAP sometimes.
|
|
Non gun type people, loaded gun in reach, "safe action", showing off wares a bit, almost predictable.
Would he have known to flip a safety off ?...just sayin'. |
|
I had a guy I was hunting with one time pull the trigger on a shotgun to see if the safety was on instead of just looking down to see if it was on, we didn't hunt together after that.

I've had a hard time retraining my dad with this behavior. It seems like once you become an empty nester certain common sense gun rules just go out the window. I posted a thread a long time ago about those rounds. On of those in .44 Magnum will go through several walls, a shower wall suround and a hair dryer. Ask me how I know.

Damn lucky that day. I bet your friend will feel like a POS for awhile, but hope he doesn't lose interest in shooting altogether.
I remember when I first got started shooting seriously, I went out and when I was done with a particular firearm I would just set it down. I didn't think to unload it, and didn't know enough about them to even check the safety but was too embarrassed to admit that. I'm not sure if the people I was with ever noticed, but after I got comfortable and became a safety nazi I was always embarrassed by that. I wouldn't blame them if they never invited me again, but fortunately they did. |
