Vodka martini shaken not stirred ?
|
|
|
There was a hotel out here that made a thing out of the martini Daniel Craig orders in 'Quantum of Solace' when the movie came out - three parts Gordon's gin, one part vodka, one part white wine vermouth. Was pretty awful in reality. I prefer vodka martinis.

Martinis suck no matter what they are made with. Whiskey/Bourbon neat or on the rocks.

Yes, and it tastes like very cold vodka. A properly made martini with gin, stirred, is much better.
If you shake it you lose the flavors in the gin. |
|
Father in-law drank gin and extra dry tonic water. Nasty but two or three would set you right.

when i drank martini's i drank vodka 1's
got sick as a dog when i was 15 at a sports event (drank gin and tonic all day) cant stand the smell of gin yet. 50 or so yrs ago. wont even have it the house. we throw 2-3 parties a year with over 100 guests' invite says no gin will be served. my house my game. u need gin to party stay home 1texan |

The theory behind why J.B. would order his drink wrong on purpose is so that more ice would be melted into the drink thus diluting it so as to not get as drunk as one otherwise would. Or, maybe he is just an unsophisticated Brit who doesn't like gin.

Martinis don't have vodka in them. Calling cold vodka in a cocktail glass a Martini is as bad as calling cold vodka in a margarita glass a margarita. It's just not.

I've had two perfectly-made Vesper martinis in my life. If done right, I can drink them all night...or until I pass out or throw up.
|

Always wanted to order one, but always felt like it'd come off as annoying.

Martinis are the nastiest cocktail I've ever had. I wouldn't mind trying James Bond's favorite cocktail though: https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/564x/0a/1e/41/0a1e4183ba687ef281a866761e633e75.jpg View Quote yes, I'll have a Vesper, slightly dirty. |

And/or spent a lot of time undercover in the Soviet Union and got accustomed to it. View Quote I do remember a Bond book mentioning that he liked straight vodka, ice cold, with a pinch of pepper in it. the pepper wasn't for flavor, but to absorb impurities down to the bottom. impurities implies bootleg, bathtub vodka, a Soviet staple. |

A dirty, gin martini with a citrus garnish is pretty good.
Vodka ones are pretty bland in comparison. |

I keep gin in the cabinet, but never any for me. Awful stuff. I'll sip on absinthe though... |

Yes and it was so delicious I had 4 more inside of an hour.
I was puking 15 minutes after the last one and never had one since. |

While reading these replies, I'm wondering to myself who HASN'T had a bad gin experience?
January 1995. Not a drop since. |

I've ordered a couple FOR other people, but never drank them myself. Whiskey on the rocks or rum and coke are the only things I drink.

I've actually never had gin. My mom used to drink Gin and Tonics when I was growing up and I couldn't stand the pine-sol smell, and that always stuck with me as adult. If I ever get off Warfarin and can drink again I'd like to try it now that my tastes in alcohol are more refined. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

I have used Lillet Blanc before to make the Vesper martini: http://www.spiritsoffrance.com.au/441-thickbox/lillet-blanc-white-french-aperitif-bordeaux-17-750ml.jpg I have no idea if that is supposed to be the proper replacement for Kina Lillet. It really doesn't turn my crank as far as martinis go. The correct amount is stick your finger in the vermouth bottle, turn it upside-down, turn it back up, pull out your finger and swirl it around in the gin. |

Or, maybe he is just an unsophisticated Brit who doesn't like gin. In one of the older (Sean Connery or Roger Moore) movies, he shows up to a resort with briefcase filled with all the fixin's, including vodka. He is drinking them recreationally. I have had vodka martinis before and they are good if you use vermouth. A lot of people order them "dry" so that you only get a tiny hint of vermouth. This is why people think they taste like crap. The right amount of vermouth makes them taste pretty good. ETA: Lol, see above. |

Vodka martini shaken not stirred ? View Quote That's NOT a Vesper. A Vesper calls for 3 oz Gordon's Gin, 1 oz vodka, 1/2 oz Kina Lillet, lemon zest, well chilled and served in a champaign flute. Yes, I've made MANY of them. Yes, they will seriously fuck up your shit. IIRC, the "shaken not stirred" thing was a Hollywood contrivance, not what Fleming wrote in Casino Royale. |

Does not matter what they are made with, Martinis are just delivery systems for delicious olives.

The correct amount is stick your finger in the vermouth bottle, turn it upside-down, turn it back up, pull out your finger and swirl it around in the gin. That's actually not correct at all. That only came about the past couple decades. The original Martini was 30-50% vermouth, and a modern proper Gin Martini should be no less than 20%. |
