This is a fun tale I forgot about until seeing a recent article about it.  I'm sure it's been covered here but we're doing it again.

Glendale is surrounded by Denver and hasn't been annexed because of 1) a few shopping outlets, and 2) Shotgun Willie's, a profitable strip club.

Glendale has for about 20 years had plans to develop a mostly blighted strip of land into a retail and amusement fun land.  Jobs, revenue, win-win.

Enter the rug store.

Mohammed Ali Kheirkahi owns a carpet store and sells his overpriced junk to rich idiots in Cherry Creek.  He knows of the city's open plan and buys the property ahead of time.  The city makes a fair market offer of 11 million and M.A.K. (the name of his investment company) returns with a highly inflated demand (about $124 million).  The city says no, but let's negotiate.

Enter the Oathkeepers

MAK now goes on a huge smear campaign stating the city is trying to run him out of town and is planning on condemning his property to steal it from him.  This, despite that was never actually talked about or planned.  He convinces local papers to side with him.  The public is shocked about the money hungry city council and action is demanded.  A Denver councilman files an open records action on thousands of pages of plans.  Ethics lawsuits are filled.  At some point the cry of tyranny became so loud Oathkeepers showed up to take part in a "shock and awe" publicity march on city hall.  MAK brings in high class lawyers and developers and shows 60 story apartment complexes as ideas for his "proposed plans".  His idea begins being called the Tehranian Deathstar by the public.

Fast forward.

Open records are poured through and nothing about eminent domain is found.  Ethics suits are thrown out as being completely baseless.  Public opinion begins to turn on MAK.  Papers and radio shows switch sides.

Enter the Feds.

MAK had at some point gone to the local FBI office and filled complains about Glendale pushing anti-Muslim agendas.  A character by the name of Charles Johnson shows up and starts bullying and following anyone opposed to MAK's ideas.  This includes radio stations, news writers and politicians.  Glendale PD picks up Johnson who insists he is a contracted PI from Tennessee.  The police discover driver's licenses from three different states on him and that he is neither licenced for PI work in Tennessee or Colorado.  Skip forward and out of nowhere the Denver FBI insists the DA drop all charges against Johnson.  The DA tells them to pound sand and goes public with the demand.  People who made complaints against Johnson are brought in by the FBI and interviewed.  A mild shitstorn erupts and a Denver Special Agent is canned.

Fast forward to now.

MAK has lost all court cases again the city and its council including a move to keep Glendale from recovering legal fees.

TLDR, the FBI and Oathkeepers inadvertently team up to defend a complete liar involved in local politics.

As you noted in the beginning, Glendale is a very special place.

So did Loretta Lynch strong arm the local FBI agent to pressure City officers to leave the Muslim alone?

Theory is they were doing a civil rights investigation based on Lynch standards regarding Islamophobia.  I've never heard any hard evidence on it one way or another.
