I thought the first 2 seasons were decent. A lot of the sex was gratuitous and unneeded most of the time though. Season 3 has its moments, but there is also a lot of feminist stuff I didn't care for.

watched 1 & 2 seasons
some scenes you just have to fast forward through (what do nutnfancy videos and penny dreadful have in common? answer: the fast forward button) but the era is cool and frankensteins original monster steals the show. dorian greys character brings nothing to the show but agenda when you see him just ff timothy dalton with the broomhandle mauser is worth the watch. |

Remember the show is about evil, darkness and corruption in all it's 19th century forms. I think most of the original novels have fallen out of favor today but they're all worth reading, even if Bram Stoker is a bit over the top.

I started the series threads on it, liked it a lot. There is some gratuitous gaydude stuff that wasn't necessary.
I thought it has some of the best dialogue on TV when it was at the top of its game. Eva Green, Timothy Dalton and Rory Kinnear (Creature) were awesome all the way through. |

Excellent show. I had to FF through some of it but Vanessa, the Creature, Brona/Lilly....shit, most of the characters were reallly good.
Be forwarned.....there is a LOT of Oscar Wilde type stuff with Dorian Grey...but that WAS the point of Dorian Grey, he was a hedonist. Eva Green wears 19th Century regalia like no other woman ever. I LOVE how the Mauser C96 is actually a supporting character. I was VERY surprised at that. I LOVED how the show actually films and deals with guns.....I was amazed at that. There's fucking guns EVERYWHERE....good, old, gorgeous English, German and American GuNS! It was sweeet!!!!! |

Excellent series, and one of the best written shows of this genre in the past few years. This isn't some Twilight vampire/horror type teen series. It's dark, evil, and the outcome for characters isn't always a positive. If you're looking for a titty show, there's some of that, but it's mostly a dark character driven series.

I watched one episode and couldn't figure out why it was "so" great.
Black Sails at least had some bi-racial lesbian scenes in the one episode that I watched. And what's the other one with the dwarf? Game of Thrones? They stripped this one gal down and threw stuff at her while she walked through town naked after they cut her hair off. I didn't get that either. I'm totally not invested in 90% of these "movie channel" shows. meh... just meh not any better than the stuff they show on the networks except that there's swearing and naked people |
