What will you all be using for optics on your new gun?  Am I crazy for thinking a red dot?

ETA:  Were any of your rear sights pretty crooked?  Mine seems to be off to the right a decent bit

I'm a Henry guy who just popped in on a 45-70 thread.

Now I'm looking at cartridge belts.

I hate this website so much.

Actually, no, that seems about perfect.  .45-70 is not ANYTHING like a long-range ca'tridge, so putting a variable with a gazillion magnification on it would be pretty pointless.  Good short-range fast shooter for things that are trying to spike you, so a red dot would prolly be the perfect choice.

Nope, I've had an aimpoint M3L on my guide gun forever.  Just spend the time learning how high or low to hold because the cartridge drops like a rock.

It's not a 45/70, but I like a 1.25 - 4 Leupold on my 1894P.

Red dot would be fine choice IMHO. I put a Nikon prostaff 3-9 on mine because I already had it...

Edit:

The more I look at the scope the less I like it...might work, haven't shot the rifle yet. It just looks huge on this rifle and it's more magnification then I'll ever use. Williams peeps ordered.

The gun, depending on load, is fully capable of taking anything in North America and has taken considerable African game out to 200ish yards.  For that reason, I put a 1.5x5 Leupold on mine instead of a red dot or something similar.

Shot a small buck with iron sights at dusk with mine. It was heavily wooded, and I didn't think I'd be able to see far.

One place I had enough room to see he poked his head out into the clearing.

110yards.  With irons.  I had to take a knee when I noticed the guide gun shaking a bit.

G & A has claimed that Remington has gotten their shit together, and the new Remlins are good kit.  But of course they accept advertising from Rem, so...

I know I'd still look for a JM marked gun.  And did, when I bought a thutty-thutty a couple years back.

Last several years they've gotten better.

Only thing wrong with the one I just picked up that I notice, is the front sight is loose. It slides back and forth in the dove tail.

And the trigger is heavier than my guide gun.

I just picked one up for $299 and gave it a thorough going over. It looks like they got their act together and are putting out a decent product. I compared it to my older guide gun and it looks every bit as good as the old Marlin made one.

My brother and I took out the Marlin 45-70 (same one walmart had) that we got when my dad passed and fired some 405 grain shells.  holy  hell that kicks like a mule.  LOL.  fun though.  I was going to get a new recoil pad for it so we can shoot more than half a box next time.

I use a Leupold 2.5X with QD rings on a Wild West Guns mount.  It works quite well. I replaced the front sight with an AO blade front with a white line.  I actually like the rear buckhorn sight.  The scope returns to zero when removed.  If I'm hunting in the rain I take the scope off.

MVA #108 Vernier Tang Sight is what you seek.

I'm thinking about a 1 by 4 or 2 by 5 because with the leverevoltion rounds 300 yards isn't out of the question for deer.  Sadly as I've gotten older my eyes have gotten worse and I don't think I could tag something at 200 yards open sites.

I never thought about a peep sight, might be cool to have on there to keep it a little more retro looking.  Then again it is a remlin so I won't feel bad about throwing a red dot on it

I would put a Leupold FX-2 3x20 on it with a custom BDC knob to adjust the reticle.

I don't havery a 45/70 but have the 450 marlin. I have had several different types of optics on it. Currently I have XS ghost ring and a PA micro dot. I rarely get shots past 100 yards so it's a good setup for the bottoms I hunt. The micro dot has held up very well with 420 gr cast at 1950 fps.

This thread is relevant to my interests. I've always been interested in a Win. 1895 in 4050 krag. The desire to own one however is curtailed by the price tag.  After seeing several threads here on the malin 1895 lately, I'm mildly interested in one but I don't know much about the  45 70 round. Where on the inter webs can I go to learn more about leverguns and what's available?

All of my scoped 45-70s have Nikon African 1-4 scopes on them. Outstanding optics.

Nothing wrong with the Skinner sights but they cost about three times the Williams sight.

I agree with trying to keep the 1895 looking more traditional, but it's all personal preference.

If you aren't sure you will like peep sights on the rifle, the Williams is a less expensive way to find out...

One of mine will stay stock except a 2x10 scope that I already have laying around with nothing to attach it to. The other one will get a larger lever loop, peep sights, and extended magazine tube installed. I will also add some leather work (sling, stock pad/ammo holder, and loop wrap)

I have been wanting to mount a small red dot on my Guide Gun, I would like it to be as low as possible (co-witness with iron sights) would be perfect but I doubt that will happen.
I've been looking at the Burris mount #410333 that is meant for the Fast Fire III, mounts using the holes in the receiver, but haven't seen one mounted yet.  They are $40+/- on E-bay.
Probably will just go ahead and do it.

I put a peep site and scout scope rail, with a Leatherwood 2-7x LER on QD mount.
Range wise on a 45-70 you are probably engaging at 25-150 yards or so and thats enough help for my old eyes to actually be able to see things.

I just bought one this morning at walmart. Didn't even really want one, but for $289 off normal price, I figured what the heck. Then I saw how much shells were for it. Oh well. I plan on using it on a deer in the woods this year just because. I'll mainly used it for hogs though. I'm going to have to reload bullets of course. I'll probably stick to hornady rounds for it in the event that I want to tag something out to about 200. Its a pretty nice gun. Nicer than the .30-30 that I used to have (1976 marlin 336). This is a heavy gun, and feels pretty nice.

I have seen Docter optics on marlins and winchesters.
Forward mounted, they are fast to pickup the dot.

But, I have to hold things at arms length to read them.

The 2 moa dots are too small for me in this application.
I like 3 and 4 moa more gooder.

I have the same scope and rings on an old Ashley Outdoors mount and ghost ring iron sights on my 444. I brought three Marlins about 20 years ago and they are all very nice shooters. All of them have a trigger in the four and a half pound range and I love shooting those guns. The only problem now is the price of the .444 Marlin ammo. When I bought it it was $16 a box for the Remington  and $20 a box for Hornady 265 grain.

New production Marlin 45-70
XS Sight rail
XS Front sight
Leupold VX3 1.5-5
Bear proof extractor
Bear proof one piece follower

All duracoated matte black, except the tube - which will be done when I have the gun threaded to for my SiCo Hybrid when I get the stamp for it.

I'm going to get the new style XS rear sight and lower the rings a good bit.

Nope. Just the Regular VX3 1.5-5

I have a trident tactical stock pouch, with two risers in it to get a consistent cheek weld.  It will hold a 2 inch group @ 100 yards, just off some loose bags, with hornady factory 325gr.

Edit:

It's on High rings to get the scope up and over the rear sight.

The new XS rear sighs don't have the full shrouds on them. I should be able to drop it down to a medium or even low ring set.

Thats what I have on my .375 I hunted Africa with. It would be a good choice for a 45/70 as well. I might also recommend quick release with Ghost rings as a back up.

I picked mine up yesterday.  I'm probably going to stick with the standard iron sights for awhile.  I have a feeling this gun will shoot well with the irons.  I'm liking the 1-4 x 20 set-ups, though.  Down the road, I might do something like that.  I just ordered some LEVERevolution ammo for this thing today.  Can't wait to shoot it!
