Was this considered a funny movie at the time?

No it was a drama. I liked the book better than the movie.

I have to read the book. There is definitely a lost element in the film.

This flick seems like a bash on cops.

It sucks.

Never saw the movie, liked the book.  Liked The New Centurions, too.

Never saw the movie but liked Choirboys and The New Centurians.

The jumper on the roof is one of the best parts.

Just don't use the same logic late at night on a
Guy threatening to shoot himself. It's not as funny.

A great book. Read it in high school and became a Wambaugh fan. He is a great writer. The movie? Meh. Can't do justice to the book.
