Intentionally blocking me in and not allowing me to get my child to the hospital would have gotten someone shot, badge or no badge.

You think it takes a bad ass to protect your child from dying? I think it takes a coward to do nothing while someone else allows your child to die. Don't feel bad though, I doubt you're alone. There are probably plenty of other cowards out there in this world too.

Good.  He should not be forced to do it.  If his job required him to do it, which it didnt, he could be fired but it didnt.  Stupid parents should have known how though.

Very recently went for my EMT cert to round myself out a bit - EMT's actually advise AGAINST giving aid even in dire circumstances after 911 is called.

Even with the proper certs, if it's proved that you did something incorrectly, you're getting sued...

Begs the question: Wtf was the point of spending $1500 on a cert if I can't use it...
View Quote

You need to check your local laws, but in some AO's by having the cert makes you legally responsible to act in times of need. If it is found that you are required to act and did not.....you are FUCKED.  The other issue is you can be dragged into court and grilled for your actions, right or wrong.

Not strictly necessary though. Most important thing is keep the blood moving.

Yes, but that is the lay responders training not the first responders training.

But you are correct, if I don't have a pocket mask or BVM I am just doing strict compressions.

I'll trust the doc on this one.

But, as a parent of a child with a known condition, how do you not have the common sense to go get some basic training and equipment yourself?

Their Plan A was to call 911, and they were upset when it didn't work.

I'm just saying, in general, if your Plan A is to call for help, you need a better Plan A.

He stopped her for driving down a one way street, and then gave her a police escort to the hospital. But you would have simply shot him for "intentionally blocking you?" Would you also have shot at the other drivers impeding you by simply driving in the correct direction? I mean, how dare they not immediately yeild to your obvious superior judgement?

Is there a separate number I can call where a competent, professional who's actually trained to help me will come?

We're not medics. Our first aid training was done in a morning before lunch in the academy. 3-4 hours total.

I've tried though. I've held a guys brain into his head after he shot himself and was still breathing while waiting for medics. Used my personally bought tourniquet on a victim, he died. Tried to hold whatever I could over bullet holes while waiting for medics.  Been thrown up on while doing CPR.

I'll try to help people. Just don't expect very good results. We're not trained or equipped for it.

Hell some lady the other day was livid at me when a guy died on the sidewalk because I wouldn't get my "heart machine" out of the back. We don't carry AEDs but she wouldn't believe me

This thread is kind of relevant because almost exactly 30 years ago as a security guard at Grand Teton I had to give CPR/rescue breathing to an 86 year-old man whose family had dragged him from near sea level to 6,800 feet for their vacation.   I didn't want to, but I felt an obligation to do it.

Summary:

1.  Yes, I had CPR training, but years before in boot camp.

2.  Yes, he threw up in my mouth.

3.  Yes, I got sick a couple of days afterwards.

4.  Yes, he was pretty much dead by the time I started.  But since the NPS EMTs were over 45 minutes away, I had to keep at it for that long.  All while his family watched.

Thankfully, Wyoming has a very strong Good Samaritan law.  Nothing happened, never heard from the family.

If the parent in question had called 911 the dispatcher would likely have sent EMS.  Instead they decided to drive to the hospital themselves and were pulled over for going the wrong way down a one way street.

Are you aware that there are people in this world that have a severe medical condition which causes them to be that way? My mother for instance is one of those people. She is a truck driver that has bad knees and a bad back from driving the truck but you probably do not care about that case either. Oh well I am not one of those people. I am 6'4" 245lbs and I exercise every day. I would love to see you say something like that to my mother in front of me. Probably never happen though you are probably just an internet tough guy. I doubt very seriously you would say that to someones face. Just my thought. What do you think? Oh I am sorry you probably do not have a brain. I on the other hand will be happy to buy you a plane ticket to come here and see if you have the nerve to say that to someone I know.

I cert'ed less than four months ago and we were still taught breaths and compressions, issued a mask and everything (work for a power company, all employees get the training as part of the new hire process and it's updated annually during our monthly safety briefings, we get a new mask each time).

I don't recall, it wasn't AHA or Red Cross, not sure what I did with the card and handbook, it's some company contracted to do it.  Had a nice resusci-Annie, all kinds of lights to tell if you were doing things right or wrong, beats the heck out of the purely mechanical ones we had twenty years ago the last time I cert'd.

Cops arent EMTs. Should they help if they can, they probably should, especially if they have the right training. Should they be punished if they don't? No. They aren't EMTs.

I'm required to be CPR certified to hold my license. That doesn't mean I'm actually going to preform CPR on someone, especially if I don't know them.

2. As anybody who has spent any amount of time doing EMS knows, your lawsuits, real or threatened, come more often when you fail to act, rather than when you act incompetently.

3. To say "police aren't EMTs" is not really a sound argument. I did law enforcement for a few years, and part of the job description specifically stated "provide emergency medical care to the extent trained to do so" or some such shit. Also, the department mandated us to be Red Cross certified at the CRP/AED-First responder level. So, to say "Cops aren't EMTs" doesn't hold much water.

I've preformed CPR quite a few times during my time as a Leo. Later working for the city as an engineer I had to get re-cert in Fistt-Aid & CPR.

When the CPR training started, the instructor asked if anyone had used it?  I was the only one to raise their hand. I then told him that I would not take the class as there wasn't anyone in the city except the blonde sitting next to me (she worked with me ) I would ever use it on.

I still don't get why people think cops are supposed to be medics.

Also it's my understanding CPR would not have saved her.

CPR is hardly ever effective. Fucking TV and movies have convinced ignorant people that it works most of the time.

Exact survival rates are difficult to come by, as studies generally look at specific populations. A 2012 study showed that only about 2% of adults who collapse on the street and receive CPR recover fully.
