Leviathan is well regarded, but Crack the Skye is easily my favorite Mastodon album, and it was one of the first that came to mind when I read the thread title.

I'm not usually a big fan of this type of vocals but Amon Amarth really kills it and especially with Jomsviking. I think it's excellent but I tend towards power metal. I'm not sure if it's my "best ever" but I'm really liking it right now.

Some great choices in here. For me however, it's either Black Sabbath, or Paranoid. Those two albums must have seemed like they were dropped off of another planet when they hit in 1970.

ETA: My favorite Sabbath album is actually Sabotage.

It'd be impossible for me to pick one and say "this is the best metal album ever".  There are some good suggestions in this thread- Reign in Blood, Master of Puppets and Vulgar Display of Power are classics for sure.

But somebody posted Mastodon's Leviathan and somebody else posted Opeth's Blackwater Park. Those are great albums too.

I couldn't pick a favorite among those 5, let alone say one of them was the greatest ever.

I saw Dethklok years ago when they toured with Mastodon, Converge and High on Fire. I really went to see the other bands, but Dethklok did put on a good show.

My man, I posted III.  Even the Brendon Small album was solid.  It's more power metal but you can tell the guy definitely loves metal.

I had tickets to see them again with lamb of god and Gojira, but that tour got cancelled when Randy Blythe got arrested in the Czech Republic on that manslaughter charge. That would've been a great show, too.

So, so, so many when delving into some of the more obscure sub genres of metal.

This may not be the best, but one of the blackest.

Yeah, when I saw them it was for the Dethalbum III tour. Lamb of God was supposed to be on the ticket, but Randy was in the klink, so Machine Head replaced them.

Thank God you totally botched the spelling of that album.  I was beginning to think it was so deep that even the title contained obscure words.

I agree with your first sentence. Can't exactly compare apples to apples.

For whatever reason, I'm not super familiar with Queensryche. Guess I should check that one out.
