$200 for the kit and test? Wow, I think it would be cool to know my genetic background... but not that cool!
One of the guys I work with did it, though. Found out he's like 98% pure white. White as white could white. I'd bet I'm probably close to the same. |

Yesterday I sent my raw data to one of those companies that does an in-depth analysis and the results were fascinating. It seems I'm a slow metabolizer of coffee and get more of a "kick" from it than most people. Explains a lot! I Also found out that I have several genes that code for red hair, including one that is specific to Ireland, even though the only red hair I have is on my arms. I also have numerous genes that contribute to a longer lifespan, which is comforting. Oh, I also have the "Warrior" gene: VAL/VAL. Genetics is a fascinating field. |

There was a cool documentary piece done some years ago, on family myths. Having native american ancestry ranked very high, a lot of families claim it. I guess it was "cool" to say you're part native american. The documentary showed that it was most common among black families. They did DNA tests on several black celebrities who claimed it, one being Morgan Freeman. It turns out none of them had it, but all had European ancestry. |

So a lot of folks that had ancestors that slept with slaves or freed blacks started claiming Indian in them instead to explain darker skin, nappy hair, etc.... But on the flip side.... some tribes did adopt members into the tribe. So technically if records were actually kept, some are legally.members of the tribe since their Great x3 Grand Mama or Pappy was adopted into the tribe. |
