CCW Weekend: What Police Want From Concealed Carriers During A Traffic Stop

If police pull over a person that is legally carrying a concealed firearm, what should such a person do? That’s a question that gets asked a lot. Many concealed carriers pride themselves on being law-abiding citizens, and given that they have a gun on them, how best to act when interacting with police is a good thing to know.

***
If pulled over, relax. Assistant Police Chief Michael Ward of the Bradford, Penn., Police Department told The Bradford Era that any motorist stopped by police should first relax and take a breath. Police officers don’t know what to expect from a traffic stop and are human, too. Captain Brent Allred of the Wichita Police told the Wichita Eagle that motorists should relax and be as forthcoming as possible. Nervous and twitchy people tend to make officers more nervous in turn.

Declare that you have a concealed carry license and a concealed pistol. Virginia State Trooper Alan Kelly told Britsol, Va., ABC affiliate WCYB that, “we do not like surprises” and to inform an officer of the permit.

Spokane, Wash., ABC affiliate KXLY quoted Chief Lee Bennett of the Airway Heights Police Department as saying it is best to “declare that you have a concealed pistol license and where the weapon is.” This same sentiment was echoed by the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, of Loudoun County, Va., from their Facebook page in the wake of the Philando Castile shooting. A similar view was echoed by Police Chief Scott Marchand of Pocatello, Idaho, in the Idaho State Journal after that state enacted its constitutional carry law.

It is also recommended to hand over your permit along with your driver’s license.

****
Keep your hands in plain view. Chief Bennett advises that concealed carriers stopped by police to keep their hands on the steering wheel unless ordered to do something else. The Loudoun County Sheriffs’ Office recommends having the window all the way down, hands at 10 and 2 on the wheel and to have the dome light on.

Wait for the officer to give you instructions and when you comply, do so slowly and in plain sight.

You mean you aren't supposed to keep trying to grab at your wallet that is located just below the slightly visible handgun in your waist even after the officer tells you not to move?  Who would have guessed?

There is no requirement to inform in Florida, and I see no reason to bring it up, unless I am about to be searched.

Of course, I don't do sketchy shit in my vehicles, so I haven't been stopped in 15 years.

I've been pulled over 8-10 times in the decade that I've been carrying and not gotten a single ticket.

Windows down
Engine off
Hands on wheel with license and CHL in hand
Nothing gun related in the same place as insurance info is located
Polite, look him in the eye
"You carrying right now?" "Yessir 4 o clock on the belt"

Never had a single ticket or an ounce of trouble.

The only comment I've ever received about my concealed carry was from a tribal police officer, "Holy shit, is that an Hk? Can I see it please? I'm getting rid of this glock and getting me one of those as soon as I can get some cash together..."

I dont get this "im not telling anyone unless they ask" mentality..

if you have a CCW then you've already submitted to the law, dont be an idiot and pull that attitude with a cop.

odds are, if you were pulled over, you were breaking the law and you know it.

when I've been pulled over, I simply hand the officer my license and ccw permit at the same time and have them out of my wallet and in my left hand hanging out the window as the officer approaches the vehicle (with my right hand on the steering wheel)..

but who would have guessed it? (im a white guy that's never been mistreated by the cops).

attitude is FUCKING EVERYTHING when dealing with LEOs...

Yeah, I have all that stuff ready for the officer when he gets to my window.

Nothing worse than digging around a car with a cop standing there.

I tell them and also hand them my CHL. Once my DL gets ran they will know I have a CHL. No need to hide the fact or surprise the officer. I've also never received a traffic violation when being upfront and honest.

Please note that this is ONLY applicable to white people who have a CC permit. If you are black, you have less than a minute to live, after the officer leaves his car, and approaches you.

I recommend using your last minute alive on Earth to send your wife, if you are married, a text telling her how much you love her.

I DO NOT inform while carrying unless they ask.  There's no reason they should know anyway.  I'm polite, and respectful while I'm interacting with an officer.
The moment you tell them, you will be sitting there for another 5-10 minutes while he runs the gun, counts the rounds, and struggles how to operate it.
Keep your mouth shut and be polite, and only tell if they ask.

You have every right to do it your way, knock yourself out.
But do not infer that law abiding citizens that are following the law to the letter are idiots.

That "mentality" is not an attitude, its the LAW in many places, and with good reasoning behind it.

What I don't get, is the attitude "anyone with a gun is a potential felon and will kill me", and then projecting that onto law abiding citizens on the side of the road.  Being guilty of a traffic violation does not equal being a murderer.

I do agree, that attitude is everything.  However, even a good attitude won't isolate you from an overbearing, fascist, azzhole, with the state's power/authority...and a gun, who wants to disarm you on the side of the road, then steal your legally owned property and means of defense.

you and I are in the same state

yet, due to the way you acted, you were put through this rigamarole and I've NEVER been put through it (probably) because I was upfront and had a good attitude..

ONE time when I was pulled over, I was asked to leave the vehicle and directed the officers to my firearm(s).  once they retrived them they let me get back in the vehicle.
and continued with the ticket.

it didn't bother me one bit.
if it would bother you, youre probably showing attitude whether you know it or not (most people with a shitty attitude either dont realize it or dont care).

you keep doing what youre doing and you'll keep getting what you've been getting..

I'm doing what I've always done because 6or7 out of 10 times that I've been pulled over in the last 20 years, I've been given a warning and not a ticket..

More than one LEO on this site has posted that they disarm people legally carrying and run their guns when they encounter them on traffic stops as SOP.
I remember Bama strongly disagreeing with one of them when he posted it.

In the 22 years I've been carrying I've been stopped 3 times, we have duty to inform.

1.  He said "don't shoot at me and I won't shoot at you."

2.  He said "good for you."

3.  He said "thank you for carrying sir."

I love Oklahoma.  None of the three asked to see the gun permit.

I got deaded like 8 or 9 times right there.

Now, I don't mention the gun until the cop asks if I have any weapons.

More than one LEO on this site has posted that they disarm people legally carrying and run their guns when they encounter them on traffic stops as SOP.
I remember Bama strongly disagreeing with one of them when he posted it.

you DO realize that you're assuming that every cop that pulls you over is like THAT asshole, RIGHT??
(that's just as bad as them assuming that everyone with a gun is a criminal that needs to be disarmed..)

and we wonder why "innocent" people get treated like shit.. a very small percentage of the cops are assholes, but most of the people that get pulled over ARE assholes..

In this thread we find out who thinks you should report a legal activity to the police.

Why take the chance if I don't have to?

ETA: Especially considering all the warnings I got from GA HTF members about the PDs/cops in my area when I moved here.

4th Amendment doesn't apply to traffic stops.

You are guilty until proven innocent--assuming you don't get shot.

Pick up that can!

...God, when did this country go into the shitter?

For the most part during the War on Drugs.

NC is a must inform state
My only real interaction when carrying was;

Me: "I have my CCW permit and have a pistol on me"
Cop: "Where is it?"
Me: "On my hip at about 4o'clock"
Cop: "Leave it in its holster and I will leave mine in its."
Me: "Sounds like a good plan to me"

I don't even think he asked to see the permit, but he probably knew already when he ran the license plate.
We talked about guns for a few minutes and I left with a warning.
