I've got like 10 rifles; multiple SBR and non-SBR ARs in two calibers, RFB, FNAR, P90, etc. I don't 'need' anything. I'd 'like' an SR9, a 700, an MDR, a Steyr Aug, a SCAR 17, a Garand, maybe a SOCOM 16.

1)  .22LR bolt action of good quality
2)  AR15
3)  A good deer rifle (I like .30 cal)
4)  .45-70 single shot for muzzle loader season here in Louisiana
5)  An AR upper in 6.5 or 6.8 ,  could double as a deer/hog gun

My five:
SBR -11 inch - M4
Styer AUG
Ruger 10/22
30/30 lever action

With these five you can protect yourself and kill any animal in any terrain in North America.

I only have a need for 3 rifles.

1) 12.5" suppressed AR-15
2) Ruger 10/22 Takedown suppressed
3) Accruacy International AT suppressed

I am good with them but have others of course.

I need a Ruger #1 in .223 for exploding varmints and such.

I need a Lever gun. Maybe a Marlin .35 or a Henry Octagonal barrel in 45/70. I had a Marlin guide rifle. Damn!

I need a 7.62 NATO semi or there such type rifle. I wouldnt mind finding a Dragunov.

I'd like another Win M-70 Safari in either .416 or .458 LH just so it could look cool by my .375. Either that or a super light weight mountain rifle/scope combo in .300 WSM. On the 5th I cant make up my mind.

Be careful what you wish for.

You will love it, but unless you reload it will strain the budget. The gun is reasonably priced, but it being fun will cost you.

A Remington 700 BDL your choice of classic deer hunting cartridge.
.243, .30-06,.270, 7mm  Rem or 300 Win Mag are all good choices. Beautiful walnut , deep bluing. Elegance....elegance.

A pre-64 Winchester Model 94. Again, choice of caliber and configuration.
My preference is the Trapper Model. Either 14 or 16" barrel .
In .30-30 please, I won't turn down a .32 Special either.

Next is the 22 centerfire. Sporter weight or heavy. This is your varmint gun for prairie dogs and such.
Fast like a 22-250 or nice and easy like the  222 Remington. The 223 is more than welcome as is the 220 Swift.
Your particular situation and terrain dictate the caliber. There is no wrong answer here.

Next comes the Precision Rifle. It can be in any modern caliber from 6mm Lapua to 338 Lapua Magnum. Your rifle should be capable of true (no bullshit, back it up on paper) MOA out to 600.
It can be in any caliber except .308 Winchester. Since this is more than likely one of the most inefficient rounds in history. This is 2016. Let it go. There are several calibers out there that out-gun this relic. .260 REM, 6.5 CM 6.5 Lapua, see a pattern here? Why it hasn't gone the way of the 43 Spanish is a mystery.

Next is your primary. The fighting rifle. For competition, training, deer, home defense and varmints.
They make more than one kind for a reason. Terrain, portability, range, and  population density.
These are only some of the criteria for determining your fighting rifle or carbine.
FNC, AR, AK,FAL, M14. The choice is yours my friend.

1. Semi automatic, large capacity magazine fed rifle in a easily obtainable caliber.
2. Bolt action in a caliber capable of taking down any type of target up to 200lbs.
3. .22 Caliber
4. Lever gun in 30/30
5. Lever gun in a pistol caliber to match your handgun

Anything else is just fluff.

My classic .22 is a mint Remington 12C
(It eats stuff a 10/22 would choke on)
I can't stop at five though:
Boltguns
I have an early Commercial Mauser in 30/06 with a Lyman peep sight.
A Remington 700LH in 270 with a Weaver K6 with post recticle.
A Ruger M77 in .22 Hornet with a Weaver 3-9 duplex recticle.
Remington 512 Sportmaster bolt action tube fed .22
Single Shot
1873 Sharps replica, 45/70, 32 inch bbl sporting rifle
1854 Sharps replica, 54 cal paper cartridge Confederate carbine
1873 Trapdoor Springfield, 45/70 (Indiana National Guard rifle)
1853 Enfield replica .58 cal Rifled Musket
1750 Mike Miller .48 cal Lyman FlintlockTrade rifle
Lever guns
1894 Winchester 30/30 20 inch carbine (x2)
1894  Winchester 38/55 24 inch rifle (Legendary Frontiersmen)
1892 Rossi .357 Magnum 20 inch saddle ring carbine
ARs
20 inch with DMO & bipod
M4 clones (x2)
16 inch lightweight C7 Midlength w/Acog (CavArms lower)
Then there's the handguns & shotguns but we're just talking rifles.
I love my rifles!

1. Milsurp bolt action. Any of them will do, especially if you reload. My son has a Mosin and some Hornady 150gr soft points (.312 diameter) and will use it on some poor deer this fall.

2. Modern sporting rifle. AK, AR, Tavor, etc. Whichever fits your shoulder and your budget. They'll fend off the goblins and are a hoot at the range. They're pretty useful at small/medium game hunting too.

3. Primitive frontstuffer. For fun and for meat getting. In my state muzzle loader season gives more opportunity to hunt and can be every bit as good as the best slug guns.

4. .22 rifle. Any action type. It'll lower the cost of maintaining perishable marksmanship skills and can easily add meat to the freezer.

5. Modern bolt action with good scope, preferrably one that fires a military cartridge. A non-military cartridge that suits your need is good too, but a .308 or .300 Win Mag will kill just about anything in the lower 48 with good shot placement and the right projectile. A rifle chambered in .308 should never run out of ammo if you're even halfway paying attention to sales and can reload.

That's my $0.02 anyhow.

This.

Unless by rifle you mean long gun, in that case I would trade the milsurp for a 12 gauge pump.

I paid less for my Garand($730) than I did for my Remington 700 in .22-250($850)-then again, I got a Leupold scope and over 400 rounds of ammo with the Remington.

CZ 452/453/455 .22LR

Sako .223

AR .223/5.56

6.5 Creedmoor built on a Rem 722

FN PBR 300WSM

I still need the AR. I keep selling mine to people who think they need them more than I do.

I think my 6.5 Creedmoor is going to turn into a heavy barrel, and my 300WSM into a skinny barrel though. Or I'll take the skinny barrel off my 6.5 Creedmoor and turn my 300WSM into a 6.5 SAUM. I really should have built the 6.5 Creedmoor as a heavy barrel from the start.

I think if I had an AR (and I'm building another very soon) I would have the basics pretty well covered. However limiting yourself to 5 rifles is blasphemy.

I have the successor of the 12, a 121 Fieldmaster. Really needs its own thread sometime. My great-great uncle bought it new, he came from overseas as a kid with his mother and sister. My mom recently gave me his Belgian birth certificate, and a picture of him with me and my brothers. I think I was 7-8 in the picture.

Great rifle, and like most old .22s made when most people had one .22 and one shotgun, it's scary accurate.
