Dear Science: Why are there no hominins left on Earth? If evolution is ongoing and species are always changing and adapting, shouldn't we see new human-like species evolving from apes, even if the old ones died out? Here's what science has to say: We hate to be the ones to break it to you, but you are an ape. So were the Neanderthals, the Hobbits, Lucy the Australopithecus, the Taung child and Peking man. And while we're at it, so are orangutans, gorillas, bonobos and chimpanzees. All of us evolved from a common ancestor that lived about 14 million years ago, and together we make up the taxonomic family Hominidae. Also known as hominids. Also known as great apes. And there are hominins left on Earth — us. "Hominin" is the the technical term for archaic and modern humans — that is, creatures that are more closely related to us than they are to gorillas and chimps. (We know, the terminology can be confusing. Bring it up with the paleoanthropologists.) And to explain why we are the only ones around — for now, at least — you have to think about how evolution works. First of all, the creatures we call apes are our cousins, not our ancestors. Which would make it very hard for them to evolve into something like us. "Asking why an archaic human isn't evolving from gorillas today is like asking why the children of your cousins don't look more like you," said Matt Tocheri, an anthropology professor at Lakehead University and a researcher in the National Museum of Natural History's Human Origins Program. "Those creatures have been on their own lineage for 10 million years. You can't go back up that lineage and back down again." |

Interestingly enough... given the right (or wrong) circumstances, environment, and conditions, Humans could evolve back into something resembling an forest dwelling ape again. Given enough time and food-stamps, it is almost sure to happen.

View Quote It is fascinating to see this kind of skill in an ape, but it leads to the question, the chimp is able to quickly memorize strings of numbers, but at the expense of what? Speech? Fine motor skills? It's almost like autistic savants, who are able to perform incredible, but very, very narrow skills, like being able to count out prime numbers in sequence ad infinitum. However, they often fail spectacularly at simple tasks we take for granted every day. |

I always did think it was strange that of all the millions and millions of species that have lived on earth, only one evolved into building skyscrapers, mapping DNA, exploring space, etc. The other 99.9999999% are still the same dumbass animals they were hundreds/thousands/millions of years ago.
I'm not coming from a religious point of view here, I've just never heard a solid explanation of why we have evolved so much further than every other species. |

I'm certainly not "god squad" by any means, but that answer was pretty weak. It really doesn't address evolution, and he could have given very simple answers for it such as TIME (how long evolution takes) or that is how they did in fact evolve. He really doesn't answer the actual evolution part of the question at all. He basically went back to his primal instincts and tossed poop all over, hoping some of it would stick.

There are still places on Earth where it makes sense to be a gorilla, chimpanzee, etc.
Humans, deprived of their clothing, weapons, and other inventions, could not survive in those places. We hate to be the ones to break it to you, but you are an ape. That is painfully obvious to anyone who has ever driven a vehicle in traffic. |

Arguing evolution with most people is like playing chess with a pigeon.
No matter how good your opening move; the pigeon will strut around, shitting on the board and knocking over pieces, acting like it is winning. |

I think the answer is pretty simple--Nature is experimenting on us, and seeing how this whole "intelligence" thing works out. If it's successful, then more intelligent creatures will evolve.
As it is, I think the jury is still out about this whole "success" thing. Intelligence may not actually be a very good survival trait, over the long haul. Mama nature may well be cuing up the extermination machine as we speak. And, of course, there is nothing to say that we're the first intelligences to evolve here on earth, either. There could have been a bunch of past attempts at it, and we've just missed the signs of it all. I'd laugh my ass off if someone digs up signs of a sapient creature from back in the days of the dinosaurs, and we figure out that the whole Chicxulub thing was due to them mining the asteroids, and then losing control of one... The thing a lot of people fail to grasp is that we really don't have a solid, continuous historical record of life on this planet. It's more like a series of random snapshots, and we're trying to extrapolate a whole lot of shit from very limited and somewhat shaky evidence. There's plenty of room in the fossil record for there to shoehorn in the entirety of human history from Lucy forward to today, and we'd never know. How much of human history would be evident, after a million or so years...? Hell, we would probably have trouble finding signs we were here after the next major ice age. |

Each evolutionary path is specific to what assists the survival of that particular species. Most species do pretty well without using tools. |

What happened to the buffalo herds that competed with us for space? What happened to the Neanderthals? (Hint on this one - humans have always been horny bastards.) Yeah. Any two intelligent species sharing the same environment will fight to extinction, or fuck each other into the same gene pool. If pigs learned to make guns and started killing us, pigs would be annihilated by humans. That is why there aren't any other humans. We killed them. |

At least it will be really hard for nature to change us. Since we are the dominate species and we have nukes, it is unlikely we will be toppled by any other species, unless it is a virus or bacteria. |
