From what I can remember it really began a big decline after 9/11 and during the Bush years where enemies "foreign and domestic" suddenly meant liberals and terrorist sympathizers instead of the US government as it did during the late 90s. It hasn't really recovered.
The spread of information via the internet has really put a damper on it for multiple reasons. The bizarre fan-fiction about fighting a revolution gets exposed and ridiculed more than praised, especially by younger gun owners. People now assume that if you're advocating any violent illegal activity that you're a federal informant, because that's how all those little militia groups got rolled up by the feds. Then there's the fact that all these red lines have been crossed and no one has done shit, so making a new red line and talking about it is just going to embarrass yourself. I don't even see "vote from the rooftops" anymore when it used to be a common saying. "Don't tread on me"and "Molon labe" are still used obviously but they communicate a general defiant and (most importantly) defensive notion about personal freedom that a lot of people can get behind. There's a natural moral high ground to defending your home while all the talk about overthrowing the government inevitably requires nasty justifications for killing lots of average Americans. |

There are more serious types who are taking classes in small unit tactics, expressing a desire to come home and train locals they know and trust. They've learned to be a bit more guarded since we know that the NSA is everywhere.

Right now I fight with my wallet. Ask nolocontendre. I gave him a good chunk of cash at the NRA convention. I've also given thousands to the NRA-ILA. You calling out people because of a cowardly few and saying everyone is like that is dishonest and naïve. Note: the gun rights activist of Illinois just took out my money for my membership payment.
